It seems like every few weeks I go out and play and I completly lose my game. Three days ago I posted a 40 at the same course I played today. Today I posted a 52. I had 0 game. My swing deserted me completely by the 5th hole. I went to the range and after hitting a few balls I found my mistake. But it seems like on my bad days I lose it all, where as most people have bad days and can still work around a less then perfect ball flight. Suggestions?

Because you have flaws in your swing that make your golf swing reliant upon timing/hand and eye coordination. Most Tour Pros don't have the flaws that you have and are not nearly as reliant on timing/hand and eye coordination. And the ones with flaws in their swing and rely on timing, just happen to have world class hand and eye coordination and practice a ton. For example, Kenny Perry has more flaws in his swing than one can count. Sure, it's a "repeatable swing", but it's a repeatable for him. The average Joe would likely never come close to repeating his downswing so he can hit the ball well time and time again.

Yup.

Plus, unlike a Tour Pro, you don't monitor your swing as much as possible, so it's also quite likely your swing has gotten more flat or more upright. Your stance has gotten more open or closed than it should be. Your grip has gotten stronger or weaker. That sort of sutff.

Yup.

That's why I always emphasize getting a camcorder and treating it like the 15th club in your bag. You don't even have to be a golf swing expert to use it effectively. On the flip side, if you don't have a camcorder and try to figure out what you're doing wrong you'll likely never really find out and will just work harder to ingrain the same flaws.

i'm *about* the same handicap as you. today a shot an 89.

a week ago, i shot a 104. its because we aren't consistant. we can make a good swing, and than swing like crap on the next shot. or be striping it one week and over-exaggerate the feeling you had last time you play and play like crap. it happens

Everyone loses their swing. It is the way the game works. Pros lose their swing all the time. The difference is that your short game probably isn't that good, therefore you can't make par even though you miss the fairway and green on the same hole. The short game is why good players still post a good score when they lose their swing. Putting, chipping, and pitching is where this game is won or lost. Not the driver, tee box, or approach shots.

I know the short game isn't sexy, but it is the key to posting a 42 and not a 52 when your swing goes away.

Don't worry so much as to "why" you lose your swing, b/c I don't care how good you get, you will continue to lose your swing. You have to have a sound short game to fall back on when it goes. Be prepared.

Good luck to you, Golf is a very effed up game.

Sometimes its just not your day. You can obsess with having a perfect swing or you can just play with whatever golf swing you have on a given day, make the most of it and have fun. I choose the latter.
I dont care how good anyone thinks they are at this game, we all lose our way from time to time and none of us knows how or why it happens.

How long have you been playing?

If you played or practiced 2 -3 times a week before a month you will have a feel for your swing.

Ugh! Tell me about it. I went out yesterday and, for the front 9, felt like I never played a round in my life. Everyone around me was scoring PARs and bogeys and I just couldnt right the ship.

On the back 9 I decided to just have fun and try to figure out where I was going wrong. I found that I was just not taking the club back on plane. I was taking it back WAY under and was relying too heavily on perfect timing in order to get any kind of a decent shot. I tried a few shots deliberately taking club straight up ala Furyk (well it felt like Furyk to me) and that got me back to feeling what a good swing is. I was hitting the sweet spot again. After a few good shots, I found my rhythm again. Too bad it was on hole 13 and not 3.

Unfortunatley I play or practice daily. I probably play rounds 3-4 times a week and work the short game 1-2 days a week. I've undergone a swing change, and I think that's contributed to it though.

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
