Lets get a thread going that explains/illustrates your favorite putting drills.

Personally I like setting up targets across a line alternating in distance. Far then short then medium etc.

what type of targets?

Its not always how you drive the ball, but how it arrives.

Usually just tees that I lay down sideways. Makes for a nice 1-3 inch target.

oh alright that is a good drill, i usually dont have that much time to practice my putting when im at the green (usually) but i do practice at home, and thats a good drill for at home also.

Its not always how you drive the ball, but how it arrives.

I like to go on the practice green of every course i play and practice rolling balls across and trying to stop them on the fringe. It acclimates me to the green speeds and helps me get a good feel for distance while I practice or b4 I go out and play.

I usually roll 3 balls across the green to the fringe to get a feel for speed before putting. Often I will find an empty corner of the green and stick a tee in the ground and do 3-footers to the tee until I can hit it 10 times in a row. Gets your focus down to that certain spot. Then I just mix it up. Long putts, short putts, medium putts. My goal is to never 3-putt from any distance or break.

Ive always made a point of taking about five or ten putts with my right hand only, really helps me feel the release

I like the ladder drill. Many ways to do this, but the most basic version is where you set 7 balls down at 2 ft, 3ft, 4ft, etc. Start at the closest ball, and you have to make each one or you start over. After failing to make all 7 for the 20th time, you discover that you are now bullet proof from 2, 3, and 4 feet.

I also regularly do the "Putting Square". Find a hole that has some slope. Put 4 tees in the ground around the hole, 3 feet out, so you have a straight uphill putt, a straight downhill putt, a left-breaking putt, and a right-breaking putt. Start with the uphill putt. You must make 3 in a row in order to move to the next tee. Count your misses. After going all the way around at 3 feet, move the tees back to 4 feet and do the same thing. After going around at 4 feet, move the tees back to 5 feet. When you've gone all the way around at 3, 4, and 5 feet, add up your total misses. My best is 18 misses. My worst is somewhere upwards of 60.

putting with my eyes closed, got the idea from tom kite who does it

Usually when I practice in my basement I will take some painters tape and make about a 2ft square and then get as far back as the room allows, and just practice getting all the balls in that box, which helps eliminate three putts. I also put a little piece of tape right in the center of the box, and try to hit it right over that. Practicing that every night has improved my putting by so much.

Its not always how you drive the ball, but how it arrives.

I use a straight back - straight through motion. When I practice at home I will place a couple of books on the floor that are about a quarter inch wider than my putter. I'll put the ball in the middle of the books and just try and make a good stroke by not hitting the books.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I do this whenever I'm on the putting green, but at a different variation. I set 3 balls in a line about 5 feet from the pin, 2 balls about 10 feet from the pin, and 1 one ball about 15 feet from the pin. I try and go all the way through without missing and if I do, I start over. The 5 foot putts become automatic after a couple attempts and then the 10 footers become easier but that damned 15 footer is never easy lol. I vary the distances as well.

I like to do a lot of long lag putts. At first I just concentrate on getting a good feel for the distance and do about a half dozen without finishing out. I work on speed and direction only. Then I try to finish the putts just knocking them in from whereever the lag ends up.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
