No. Distance means very little.

Picked him for my fantasy league this week. Hit one one yesterday 365 I believe. Why pick bubba watson for fantasy league? how about leader of eagles on the nationwide tour last year.

I was reading in the article that on the Nationwide Tour he would let others tee off, even if he had honors. It mentioned even if he hit an errant drive he could would tee it up again to go up and down to save..gees..did anyone catch him in the playoff against Robert Allenby..was it me or did Watson putt too fast..meaning..didn't take some time..

I read the article, too, and planned to keep my eye on him. Apparently distance does mean something, since Mr. Watson took 4th place to himself in his first PGA Tour event. Considering the field, I think he more than impressed.

Last year's driving leader didn't keep his Tour card. Distance, as Dave has shown repeatedly, doesn't mean much at all, no.

The reason Bubba did so well? Because he

hit the 2nd most greens and putted lights out . Sure he led in driving distance, but if you hit that many greens and putt that well, I don't care where you're hitting it off the tee. Toms was 11th in driving distance, averaging almost 30 yards less than Bubba off the tee, but hit just as many greens and led in putting. Don't tell me that distance helps GIR either, because it doesn't ...not that much anyway. People will rave about Bubba's (gotta love his name) length, but look at his other stats. At least for now, he's more than a one-dimensional player and not the next Scott Hend.

Didn't we already have this conversation. The only people who try to say distance means nothing are people who can't hit it very far. Did you see the article in November's Golf magazine? They asked four tour guys besides the money list what stat would you most like to lead. 3 of the four said driving distance. There has to be something there. Seems to me a lot people round here spend a lot of time trying to downplay driving the ball. Why is that?

I think its a matter of where some put their emphasis. The general emphasis of some here is on hitting greens and putting well. Accuracy with irons and putter is more important than hitting the ball 320 yards. Yes, hitting the ball a long way is an advantage, but a good iron game (i.e. closer proximity to the hole and GIR's) and a solid putting stroke is a bigger advantage than a monster long game. Why did Chris DiMarco (281.0 yard average off the tee) keep up with Tiger Woods (316.0 yard average off the tee) at the Masters? Because DiMarco is very good with his long irons. He's more accurate with his 5 iron than I am with my pitching wedge. Tiger won but a solid iron game and hot putter kept DiMarco very close.

Remember, those who hit the ball "short" on the PGA Tour are hitting it 280 yards. Thats not exactly short. I don't think anyone here is saying that hitting it long off the tee is a bad thing, or that it doesn't matter. It does matter, just not as much as a solid wedge and putting game. Tiger is scary because he hits the ball long, is accurate with his irons and wedges, AND can putt the lights out. Not good for the competition. Anyway, you've got a valid point. Driving the ball well sets you up for more good things from the fairway, gets you closer to the hole, and boosts your confidence.

Chicks dig the long ball...and so do the sponsors.

I don't want to downplay driving the ball. I just want to put it in it's place relative to other areas of the game. Do I like seeing guys hit it 320+? Sure. I'm amazed at how those guys can hit it. But the next time you see a guy do that, remember Scott Hend, who led the tour last year in driving distance and does not have his card this year.

I'm not trying to attack you...I'm just telling you what I've learned and what I think. That's all. Jeff did a great job in illustrating that.

Thank you that is all I have been trying to say all along. I am not saying that those who hit it 320 have a huge advantage over those who hit it 290. All I have said all along is that all the great players hit it long. Not neccessarily long on the PGA tour just long to the rest of the golf playing world.
Tiger is scary because he hits the ball long, is accurate with his irons and wedges, AND can putt the lights out. Not good for the competition

Would Tiger be as dominant if he hit it like Fred Funk? Of course not. He would still be a top player because the rest of his game being fantastic, but he would not have had as much success without his length.

I think it is short sighted to say something like distance doesn't make any difference in the ability to score because of course it does. The 40 30 20 10 proves that! What is the 20 and the 10 again? Driving. It is abundantly clear that GIR is the main factor in scoring I do not dispute that at all. It is also evident to anyone who plays that putting is extremely important, the putts gotta drop to score well. But I am sick and tired of seeing the tee ball not given its due. It is an extremely important factor in being an all around player, If total driving is consistantly missing is anyone's game just like any other factor, iron play, short game, and putting. You will not be able to consistantly compete at a high level.

It seems valid that a long ball hitter who is in the fairway and hitting greens effectively reduces the par fives to long par fours. Thus he can play par golf on a par 72 course and shoot 68. Steady golf would equate to 12 under in a four day tournament.

So, a good long hitter who can two putt from anywhere would seem to have a good chance especially when you factor in dropping a few first putts.

Bury me with a golf glove in my pocket - just in case!

Vijay Tiger Phill and Ernie all play driver more often because they know that driver 9 or wedge even from the rough is easier to get close than an 8 iron from 160.They have all been quoted as using this formula over the last few years, especially Vijay and his Launcher!!!

Once again you've managed to misconstrue everything everyone has said. Nobody has said it means nothing. It clearly means, oh, about 20% AS WELL AS any effect it may have on GIR and Putting. If you're closer to the green, you're more likely to have a good GIR. But then again, if you suck out of the rough or fairway bunkers, dialing it back a notch may keep you in the fairway and then also help you hit more greens.

C'mon man, nobody here would say something like "driving doesn't matter at all." Particularly when we're well aware that it's 20% (distance) in Dave's formula.

I don't see how I misconstrued these comments they seem clear enough to me. Maybe it that you said "very little" and "doesn't mean much at all, no" instead of "nothing". For that I apologize for misquoting you. I did not disagree with anything anyone else said so.... It is obvious you and I don't see eye to eye on the importance of the tee ball but that is fine its no big deal. We have very similar handicaps but I am sure the resemblances of our games and attitudes end there.

    • When you've been teaching golf as long as I have, you're going to find that you can teach some things better than you previously had, and you're probably going to find some things that you taught incorrectly. I don't see that as a bad thing — what would be worse is refusing to adapt and grow given new information. I've always said that my goal with my instruction isn't to be right, but it's to get things right. To that end, I'm about five years late in issuing a public proclamation on something… When I first got my GEARS system, I immediately looked at the golf swings of the dozens and dozens of Tour players for which I suddenly had full 3D data. I created a huge spreadsheet showing how their bodies moved, how the club moved, at various points in the swing. I mapped knee and elbow angles, hand speeds, shoulder turns and pelvis turns… etc. I re-considered what I thought I knew about the golf swing as performed by the best players. One of those things dated back to the earliest days: that you extend (I never taught "straighten" and would avoid using that word unless in the context of saying "don't fully straighten") the trail knee/leg in the backswing. I was mislead by 2D photos from less-than-ideal camera angles — the trail leg rotates a bit during the backswing, and so when observing trail knee flex should also use a camera that moves to stay perpendicular to the plane of the ankle/knee/hip joint. We have at least two topics here on this (here and here; both of which I'll be updating after publishing this) where @mvmac and I advise golfers to extend the trail knee. Learning that this was not right is one of the reasons I'm glad to have a 3D system, as most golfers generally preserve the trail knee flex throughout the backswing. Data Here's a video showing an iron and a driver of someone who has won the career slam: Here's what the graph of his right knee flex looks like. The solid lines I've positioned at the top of the backswing (GEARS aligns both swings at impact, the dashed line). Address is to the right, of course, and the graph shows knee flex from the two swings above. The data (17.56° and 23.20°) shows where this player is in both swings (orange being the yellow iron swing, pink the blue driver swing). You can see that this golfer extends his trail knee 2-3°… before bending it even more than that through the late backswing and early downswing. Months ago I created a quick Instagram video showing the trail knee flex in the backswing of several players (see the top for the larger number): Erik J. Barzeski (@iacas) • Instagram reel GEARS shares expert advice on golf swing technique, focusing on the critical backswing phase. Tour winners and major champions reveal the key to a precise and powerful swing, highlighting the importance of... Here are a few more graphs. Two LIV players and major champions: Two PGA Tour winners: Two women's #1 ranked players: Two more PGA Tour winners (one a major champ): Two former #1s, the left one being a woman, the right a man, with a driver: Two more PGA Tour players: You'll notice a trend: they almost all maintain roughly the same flex throughout their backswing and downswing. The Issues with Extending the Trail Knee You can play good golf extending (again, not "straightening") the trail knee. Some Tour players do. But, as with many things, if 95 out of 100 Tour players do it, you're most likely better off doing similarly to what they do. So, what are the issues with extending the trail knee in the backswing? To list a few: Pelvic Depth and Rotation Quality Suffers When the trail knee extends, the trail leg often acts like an axle on the backswing, with the pelvis rotating around the leg and the trail hip joint. This prevents the trail side from gaining depth, as is needed to keep the pelvis center from thrusting toward the ball. Most of the "early extension" (thrust) that I see occurs during the backswing. Encourages Early Extension (Thrust) Patterns When you've thrust and turned around the trail hip joint in the backswing, you often thrust a bit more in the downswing as the direction your pelvis is oriented is forward and "out" (to the right for a righty). Your trail leg can abduct to push you forward, but "forward" when your pelvis is turned like that is in the "thrust" direction. Additionally, the trail knee "breaking" again at the start of the downswing often jumps the trail hip out toward the ball a bit too much or too quickly. While the trail hip does move in that direction, if it's too fast or too much, it can prevent the lead side hip from getting "back" at the right rate, or at a rate commensurate with the trail hip to keep the pelvis center from thrusting. Disrupts the Pressure Shift/Transition When the trail leg extends too much, it often can't "push" forward normally. The forward push begins much earlier than forward motion begins — pushing forward begins as early as about P1.5 to P2 in the swings of most good golfers. It can push forward by abducting, again, but that's a weaker movement that shoves the pelvis forward (toward the target) and turns it more than it generally should (see the next point). Limits Internal Rotation of the Trail Hip Internal rotation of the trail hip is a sort of "limiter" on the backswing. I have seen many golfers on GEARS whose trail knee extends, whose pelvis shifts forward (toward the target), and who turn over 50°, 60°, and rarely but not never, over 70° in the backswing. If you turn 60° in the backswing, it's going to be almost impossible to get "open enough" in the downswing to arrive at a good impact position. Swaying/Lateral Motion Occasionally a golfer who extends the trail knee too much will shift back too far, but more often the issue is that the golfer will shift forward too early in the backswing (sometimes even immediately to begin the backswing), leaving them "stuck forward" to begin the downswing. They'll push forward, stop, and have to restart around P4, disrupting the smooth sequence often seen in the game's best players. Other Bits… Reduces ground reaction force potential, compromises spine inclination and posture, makes transition sequencing harder, increases stress on the trail knee and lower back… In short… It's not athletic. We don't do many athletic things with "straight" or very extended legs (unless it's the end of the action, like a jump or a big push off like a step in a running motion).
