A league is just an association created so that the members of the league can play in regular tournaments.

For example, the Men's Club at the local course could be considered a league. Or the Golf Channel Amateur Tour could be considered a (much larger) league.
league [leeg] - noun [...] 4. a group of athletic teams organized to promote mutual interests and to compete chiefly among themselves: a bowling league.

Harry's given a partial answer, I think. Maybe 90% complete, but still missing just a little something.

Within my CLUB (Lake View Country Club or Whispering Woods), there are also leagues. Tuesday night is the "men's league" - people have formed six-man teams, and five play each week in a 9-hole match play event for four points. Teams compete against each other.

I guess you could call each "team" a club, leagues are usually just within one club, and pit members of that club against each other. Some leagues are single player type, but most have "teams" within the club.

Some larger businesses have a league all of their own at a public golf course.
