Hi
I'm curious how many men bought their wives/girlfriends their first set of clubs. And if you did, what criteria did you use?

How involved was she in the purchase? And if she was involved, what was the critiera she used? Was it different than yours?

I'm trying to figure out how men and women choose their clubs - especially their putters.

Any stories or advice would be very helpful. Thanks!

My wife has just started learning and her mother has given her a set of clubs that are certainly on the elderly side. The driver and woods could do with replacing so we've been down the driving range a few times where we can just leave a credit card and try as many different drivers as we like.

As for the criteria, she's at the early stages of the game and I just want her to feel comfortable with the clubs she is hitting.

For putters, well I find they are a very personal thing, so I'm giving my wife my old putter when I upgrade it soon

I got my fiancee her first set. Accuity complete with bag. That was a year ago. Sine then, she has tried out new drivers and settled on the Cobra. A new putter and she really liked the Orlimar, and a new hybrids and she went with Adams and of course the new Nike bag that she went with the Houndstooth and black leather one.

My criteria for the beginning was something that was hittable and could make sure she was going to play. That was a year ago last week. She took 12 lessons and went to the range once a week on top of that. She nows plays in the womens league at our club on wednesday afternoons. She also plays with a group of girls on Sunday afternoons. She is shooting around 100 and loves the sport. The clothes are what she loves most of all.

Haha...it's amazing the number of men that give their wives their old putters :) Why is that? Is it just so you can buy a new one?

I am curious how long women keep their husband's old putter before buying one of their own. Thanks for the info! Gayle

Hi Birdieman.

We all love the clothes :) I'm also finding a lot of women use style as a selection criteria on putters as well - not only does a putter need to feel good - it has to look good. Was that true for her too? Cheers Gayle

We live at golflocker. She has so many golf outfits that its crazy. I think it is fabulous. I too love the golf clothes. The womens golf style has changed so much in recent years for the better, and I think its great.

I know someone who has 26 pairs of golf shoes - one pair per outfit - can anyone beat that?!

Sounds like a good deal. Smart demoing the set first and then buying it on ebay cheaper. Did it come with a putter?

Well it is rather convenient, she likes mine, especially since I polished it up nicely, and I'm looking to go up in the putter world...

My wife is a very athlectic girl and on the tall side.I brought her senior clubs which are a little longer than Ladies clubs.I brought her an autographed real Cherry wood putter mallet head from Louisville golf and upgrade her driver every 2 years. She currently plays a FT3 with the secora shaft and she bombs it.

I bought an all hybrid set for my wife. I figure she would never practice, anyway. It was a box set with a 12 degree driver, 2 woods, putter and irons.

I hit it a few times when I had the shanks. It was an easy set to hit. Sometimes I am tempted to use it.

Then again, she only hit it once 1.5 years ago.

I introduced my wife to golf and have purchased every thing she owns. Buyer beware when it comes to women's clubs. I would suggest getting a beginner an affordable set of clubs to get her started. I bought a complete set of pings with ladies graphite shafts, driver etc. BIG waste of money.!!!!!! These were great beginner clubs that as her interest grew she quickly outgrew.(less than 6 months) After trying to teach her....NOT HAPPENING(a whole new thread) I got her a female instructor. On video one could see the massive amount of whip ladies shafts create. I have since learned that Ladies clubs were designed for someone about 65 years old and zero swing speed. They have massive amounts of loft just to get the ball in the air. I bought here a set of Mizuno 950's with Rifle 4.0 shafts. What a huge improvement in her game. Just today she hit her 6 iron 150.

My point is be careful what you buy. Just think about it. When you walk into a golf store there is 900 different sets of men's clubs...yet each manufacturer only has one set of women's. When she is ready and develops a little feel get her custom fit for something that works.

Putters.
Why would you insult your wife with your castoff. Get her custom fit for one that works for her. Check out http://www.coutourgolf.com for an awesome putter that can be balanced for a women.

I bought a wedge for a girl space friend who lives about an hour away from me. She's petite (5'1 maybe and under 100 lbs), and at a RD Tent Sale, they had petite women's gap wedges (I forget which brand) for $15, so I bought one for her, since she had to borrow a woman's club from the shop when I took her to the range once or twice. Now she has one of her own. Also, the insert in the cavity was pink, so I knew she'd like it.

Once she's decided she enjoys it, I'll take her to demo days and let her pick. I probably won't pay much, if any, of the price of the clubs.

So, criteria was seeing a club I knew she had hit well before, and picking a club that was about the right size. I measured using my leg.

Another of my girl space friends who wants to start golf lives near me, so when she's ready, I'll take her to the range where the pro I take lessons from is, and I'll ask him for a loaner club. He said he has a few, I just have to ask him up front.

I hope this helps.

If she wants the club, likes it and can putt with it then why not?

I was being a little flippant in my comments earlier using the term 'cast off'...

Hi

Good question -

What a predictably appalling bunch of responses: Hand me downs Your old crap Whatever looks pretty Who cares, she won't practise. I would suggest that clubfitting and care in choosing are no less important for women than for men. How about : The best quality I can afford The ones that are recommended for her build and strength How often do you see a couple out together skiing or riding a bike and the guy (who's usually inept and unfit) has the latest expensive gear and the woman is on whatever. A bit of respect, fellas.

    • I'll say again… you have a different definition of "temporary" and "speed" than I do. For your handicap to go up FOUR shots means you were through the soft cap and approaching the hard cap. If you did it over 15 rounds (leaving five potentially lower scores), then you played REALLY bad golf over that stretch because it's likely that only three or four of the best of those 15 rounds were actually counted, so if the three or four best scores RAISED your handicap five shots (three at 100%, 2 at 50% once you hit the soft cap), then that's some BAD golf over an extended (not temporary) period of time. And here's the thing… play 15 good rounds, or even just EIGHT, and it'll DROP again, even faster. Handicaps still drop faster than they rise, not only because of the way we calculate it (best 😎 but because of the caps. Right… it's not like you're not needing the shots. You're playing really badly, and your handicap is still lagging behind your play.
