I have Mizuno standard irons (MX25) and got a fitting after buying them (I know, I know). I found out I take clubls that are half a degree upright and
.25 " longer than normal. Also, I should use mid size grips.

Should I ditch my irons on Ebay and get another set that matches my fit or just work with what I have? Can the Mizuno's be easily bent 1/2 degree upright? Can I somehow add .25 an inch under the new grips? I know I can have the standard grips changed out for midsize easy enough.

Thanks

First, 0.5* is a little odd for an adjustment. Usually the angles are in terms of full degrees. (PING goes in .75* increments.) I can't imagine that a lie angle that is 1/2 a degree flat (i.e., a standard lie angle when you need 1/2* upright) would impact your swing in any meaningful way.

But to answer your question, yes, lie angles can be adjusted. Whether the adjustment will be as precise as 1/2 degree will depend on the shop's ability and it's measuring equipment. Second, any halfway decent shop can extend your clubs a 1/4". In fact, you could probably do it yourself. (Cut off old grips, epoxy extension in, let dry, regrip.) You will, however, suffer collateral damage in that most fitters won't attempt to save your grips. (So, you may as well make sure of the size and type of grips you want, at the same time.)

The reason it's 1/2 a degree is because I did a Ping fitting and they are 1 degree flatter than Mizuno. I measured in for a yellow dot, which is 1.50 degrees upright, so that translates to just .5 degrees for Mizuno. Also, I was

+1/2 inch for length and Ping is -.25" in length for standard, so that makes just +.25" in length. Just wondering if I should just sell my current irons and rebuy them in the proper measurements, instead of having them bent and lengthened? Or should I just stick with "standard", since these are just minor, small adjustments? Thanks

Honestly, those differences won't matter at all. 1/2* and 1/4" are within the "margin of error" for fitting anyway. Unless you are a single digit handicap index, I doubt you will ever notice (if even then).

The key, however, is not to blame any swing problems on the clubs. Trust me, 1/2* and 1/4" is not going to cause the ball to do anything funny on its own. Stay confident in your clubs and don't let negative thoughts like "I wonder if it's the 1/2* causing the problem?" sneak into your head . . . because it's not. Enjoy your Mizunos. Once you have your handicap index down some more (or new cool clubs come out), get re-fitted.

I just checked the specs for Mizuno and Ping and what I heard elsewhere is wrong. They are both IDENTICAL in length and Ping is .5 flatter for a standard 6 iron, but it varies depending on the iron. For a 4 iron, the lies are identical, but for a 9 iron, PING is 1.3 flatter.

I guess the main thing is that I need clubs 1/2 longer than stock and apoprox. 1 degree upright, but it sounds like standard isn't way off enough to hurt me. It's much easier to get cheaper clubs on Ebay if you can play standard, also.

    • Day 1: After a long practice layoff due to injury, vacation, winter darkness, and work stuff, I'm trying to start back up again. Today I just hit balls with keys from my lesson 6-ish weeks ago; neutral grip and centered turn. Gonna work with that for a few weeks, see how it goes, and then get a lesson scheduled.
    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
