I was talking to the owner of a successful golf shop the other day. He mentioned that 2005 was a really good year for iron sales. Statistics show that avid golfers buy a new driver or putter every year or so, but will buy a new set of irons every 3-4 years. 2005 was a year with a lot of people at that magic mark for buying new irons, it seems. Pent-up demand = good sales.

Anybody out there looking at irons this year? Personally, I see plenty of drivers and putters I'd like to try (Exotics, X460, R7 425, Odyssey Tri-Ball, Fat Lady Swings), but there isn't much in the way of irons that excites me. What do you think?

I'm in the market for some little things. I need a couple of fairway wood shafts, I'd like to add a hybrid or two along the way, and I probably need another putter (heh, heh). I'd like to pick up one of those three wheel carts just for kicks.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy with my bag. I love my driver, irons and wedges. I don't have as much love for the fairway woods but thats my own fault for not being able to hit them off the deck well.

This year could be a bank breaker for me. First kid is due in april. Got my eye on some new titleist 735 irons and probably a couple of oil can spin milled wedges. Will probably buy some type of new putter. I can't wait to try out the 905r either. Now if I can budget all that I'll be a happy man. Maybe divorced but happy.

Well I already boought new wedges and I have too many putters already but am excited to see the Bettinardi/Mizuno ones but I'm pretty set on clubs for now.

I did upgrade a couple putters with the UST putter shaft and need to do some re-griping so I suppose for now it's just upgrades or tweaks to my current equipment.

Grats on the incoming little one, kklick. We just found out about ours, but I have until September.

So until then I plan on upgrading my wedges, although I don't have any picked out yet. I am torn between some I saw on Golf Channel commercials and Pings or Callaways. Once I determine what lofts I will need it will be easier to decide.

After that it is just a putter, and again I am torn. Probably will be an Ug-le or a Callaway and if I go Ping or Callaway for wedges then I will probably get their putter too.

Then it is just a shaft for my NDS 13* driver and a bunch of lessons.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. My Tour Edge JMax QL combo hybrid/iron set came in yesterday. I love the irons but can do without the 3 and 4 iron-woods. With luck those and some other old clubs will bring enough trade in value to get a wedge or putter.

I saw the new Bettinardi/Mizuno putters at the Show. If you're a fan of Bettinardi's past work, you'll like these. Same honeycomb-milled faces, plenty of great blade styles and a few mallets. Nothing too different from his past designs.

I'm interested to see how successsful the Bettinardi/Mizuno pairing is. Mizuno just had T.P. Mills as their putter guy (and wasn't Scotty with them back in the 1990s?). I'm just not sure the Mizuno name helps sell many putters. Bettinardi was probably a bad fit with Hogan once Callaway bought the brand, but I can't see him selling more putters with the Mizuno name than the Hogan name. My 2 cents.

Next to nothing.

I may go with the 905R, but I like my S and I don't need something just because it's bigger. I like my Red X. Love it, at times. I need a 54° Vokey. I like my TM rescue. I like my 904 3-wood. I love my 735s. I love my Pro V1x. I love my bag. I don't wear a glove. I love my GF:II shoes.

I'm pretty happy with what is in my bag right now. The only thing I wouldn't mind doing is upgrading my irons. I'd love to get my hands on a set of MP-37's or MP-32's...probably the 32's. I've hit both and love them. Other than that, i don't think I really need much more.

Driver is good (assuming it gets fixed). Fairway wood and hybrid are great. I just replaced my wedges and putter last year and love them all. The irons are the only thing I could go for right now...

Fairways and Greens.

The X-18 Pro Series (DG S300) will be in my bag within the next couple of weeks. Thinking about the F/Speed Cobra as well.

I played a few holes with a new F/Speed Cobra driver in Orlando. Sets up very closed. But that's clearly an intended part of the design, as I didn't hit any hooks with it. Very loud and straight.

I'm planning on new irons this year, I just haven't decided which way to go. I love mine and I'm reluctant to part with them, but I also know that technology has improved by miles since I bought them. Whatever I buy will need to be fitted. I play 2* upright and + 1" now. Last fall I did the Ping fitting and they measured me at 4* up and + 1.5". I love my Hybrid and want to ad another. Any suggestions? Do any of the higher end club makers offer the option of replacing a 3 or 4 with one of their hybrids? I know that you can by entry level sets like that, but I'm looking a little higher up the line.

Adams does make good stuff, and their prices are pretty competitive. They've gotten lost in the shuffle the last few years, but people who play their stuff rave about it.

    • The criticisms are starting already 🤣 U.S. Open pro criticizes Shinnecock green conditions: 'Bumpy' After playing his first practice round at the 2026 U.S. Open, Michael Kim offered a less-than-glowing review of Shinnecock's "bumpy" greens.   The sand, I don't care about that. If the greens didn't come back as well for latest aerification, that would be a bit of a blunder on Shinnecock I think.
    • Well, if your frame of reference spins twice during the swing, then Bryson's ab/adduction is more like 780 degrees so there! (Yes I'm being silly, but not sure it's any sillier than what your pal Andy is doing...)
    • Update: Brandon Sorsby has decided to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. He will not play for Texas Tech in the upcoming season.  From my perspective, I think he did the right thing. I hope he gets the correct help for his gambling addiction. I say the right thing, because I would be worried that the stress from all of this now and throughout the entire year would not be beneficial towards his mental health.  If an NFL team picks him up, then there really isn't any pressure for him to play immediately. He can work on himself and his game for the NFL.  From Texas Tech,  "Texas Tech will continue to provide the support and recovery resources Brendan requires on this journey. Furthermore, Texas Tech will not seek return of any amounts already paid to Brendan through his NIL agreements with the University," Campbell wrote. "We wish our best to Brendan, and we offer our prayers to him and his family as he chases his dreams at the next level. This has been an unbelievably painful experience for us all, but I know that his true, underlying character and lessons learned through this experience will ultimately bring him great success on the field of play and in life." Which, I also the right thing to do.
    • So, something I noticed yesterday at the range. My eyes and visualization of what the ball needs to do is way off. I put up an alignment stick about 10 yards down range. My initial thought was, "Oh crap". Even while wearing prescription sunglasses, and I know I am hitting it towards the sun, I couldn't pick up where the ball was at all.
    • Oh man. As you can see above, Manavian mocked me for not realizing they were getting the 130° from BOTH shoulders. Apparently, though, Manavian is also wrong, as Andy said I was lying when I cited what Manavian had written: The next thing Andy says that's both accurate and clearly stated will be the first. I replied to that post with something like: Tell Manavian who said "only counting the abduction/adduction of one shoulder rather than 2." One of the issues with “bad” information is that y’all can’t even get on the same page. You've not shown that Bryson has 130° range of motion in either shoulder separately P1 to P7. I’ve shown the numbers. You’ve name-called and just said “nuh uh” repeatedly. Did you see the AMG IG video? Of course you have. Wrapping your head around the distance the shoulder travels yet, Andy? Andy later commented to explain how he got his range of motion number (apologies to whoever @iacac and @icaca are on Instagram, who are going to be wondering just what in the hell they've gotten themselves into). Oh boy. Adding the numbers in one direction and then adding them again going back is not a "range" of motion. If I can bend my knees 140°, I don't claim to have 280° range of motion because I have two knees nor because I can also extend my knees 140° after bending them. Bryson (with a driver, again — I used his iron swing) abducts about 65° (and bends his elbow a ton) with the driver. Then he adducts 50… and then another 15°… to end up right back where he started. This is exactly the equivalent of saying that I bend my knees 140° and then straighten them, creating a range of 280°. It's so silly I don't even have much of a response. It falls down completely on its own. It doesn't need even a nudge.
