I look at new clubs on the internet ... I try to play/practice every-other day ... today at lunch I snuck out for about an hour and a half and went down the road and worked with my LW on the chipping green (I wasn't on company time) ... my wife thinks I am obsessed ... should I worry?

To my own defense, It is the beginning of September there isn't a lot of time left here in the New England ... I am just trying to get in as much as I can before I can't get anymore in ...

Looks like someone has caught the bug. Well there's nothing wrong with it, I've been acting the same way except I have school so I can't play as much as a I could in the summer. This week's weather is great though I'm going to try to get out as much as possible. I'm in CT so I feel your same fear. Nothing wrong with it though, as long as your wife understands your golfing passion I'd say Hit the Links!

Sounds like an obsession to me. But there could be worse ones, that's for sure.

... we've only got around 2 months left, if that.

Tell me about it ... it's getting to a point where I barely have time to play nine after I get out of work at 5/5:30 at night ... geeeze ...

Damn Californians (and Floridians for that matter too ... and anyone else who can play golf in December ... damn you all!! ) ....

It's tough being here in the winter with the palm trees swaying and the gulf waters lapping up on the shore...with the warm Florida sun gently frying you year round. I hear the same comments on the Harley Davidson forum. Poor guys have to store their bikes for the winter. I have to wear a sweat shirt. Ya know...in my whole life...I have been in snow once. I have seen it twice. I prefer southern California and Florida sands and beaches.

To be honest, I think most people on this forum have been bit by the bug a long while ago. Sneaking out to hit some flop shots during your lunch break certainly doesn't help (err I mean it does help!)...in any case - why worry? I play through the winter all the time! Like I've said in another thread - The winter? Nothing a set of thermals, turtleneck, and skull cap cant fix

Well, the upside is that I don't have to spend money on green's fees from November to March - ish ... I get to save money to put towards greens fees in April to Ocotober ...

If I had it my way I might move a bit more south ... but the wife's family is so close that it would be too hard for her to move away from them ...

I'm pretty much the same way, I will use any free time I have to go hit the range during the week or the course on the weekends. I'm not even very good yet, I hate to think how obssessed I will be when I can actually hit the ball well.

Yep, the first time you absolutely "crush" that ball on the range, and it flies traight and true, you will want to repeat it again on the next shot ... and if you do, you will want to repeat it again on the third shot ... and if you can't repeat it again you are going to spend the next 6 shots trying to figure out why you can't repeat it ...

It's addictively addicting I tell you ...

    • I’ve been rather surprised how my original question relating to the logic behind “differential vs course handicap” elicited the responses expressed on this thread so far. I suppose it shows that there are many who have given this subject a lot of thought. I personally like the current system for the same reasons stated in the post by saevel25 and it works very well in our league. I just needed to get the reasoning/logic clear in my head so I could explain it succinctly to those who had questions. Regarding the ongoing discussion, the only tweak we make is only the scores made in league competition count. (We don’t use GHIN, we do the calculation ourselves.) The only additional thought I had is perhaps the powers that be can come up with a method, when doing the differential calculation, of giving greater weight to the rounds played more recently than those from 20 rounds ago. I’ve been testing this with an idea I had similar to the way colleges calculate GPA’s based on credits offered by different classes, but honestly, the complexity it adds to the calculation isn’t worth the trouble as any change made has proven to be inconsequential.
