Hey guys,

So I've recently been going to a pro to help with my swing. We're working on really swinging from the inside and getting my hands in front of the ball. The results have been pretty good so far, resulting in a baby fade, like 1-2 yards. The issue now is, my distance gaps are very inconsistent betweeen irons. The worst gap is b/w the 7 and 8 iron. The 7 iron carries about 155. The 8 iron carries about 120! What gives? I used to be able to hit the 8 to 145. Ball position is maybe 1 ball ahead of center. I was always taught to not put balls behind center unless its a wedge. Help?!?!

Thanks!

Hey guys,

What's your 9 iron carrying at this point?

I play my short irons from dead center in my stance, which I think helps hit down on the ball, and ensure the hands are ahead of the ball, both of which are important parts of most people's short iron play. So you might try that. Does your setup break down in some way as the clubs get shorter? If your normal setup makes it uncomfortable to get the end of the 8 iron down to ground level (whereas the 7 is okay), then you may be subconsciously changing some important part of your setup position to compensate. Is your body rotation still happening with the 8? With shorter clubs, it's more tempting to bend over the ball and swing with just your arms. Just some ideas. It would take a video (and probably someone more knowledgeable than me) to definitively tell you why it's happening. -Andrew

Hmmm. I play all irons (except teed-up long irons) in the center and I have a good gap between clubs. Are you saying that you move the ball forward from 7-8 or it's that position for all the clubs in question?

Hey guys,

If your taking lessons and its not an equipment issue the pro should be able to help you identify the reason quickly.

Everardo,

Clubs are only 1 year old, Callaway X-20 irons w/ stock steel Uniflex shaft. Would I really need to check the lofts?

Wedge,

9 iron is carrying 110-115, which is also abnormally short for me. I typically play 9 iron dead center or just ahead in the stance. I am a shorter guy, so I promise its not uncomfortable for me to get the shorter clubs down. :) Maybe body rotation, but I feel like I am really getting after it with my body?

Klaymon,

I move the ball more forward in my stance progressively depending on the club length. I typically play wedges just behind center, all the way to 3 iron 3 balls in front of center.

Either bring your club in at the golf store to check the distance or next time you are at the driving range have your buddy hit your clubs to see if its the club or your swing that gives you the gap between your irons
