I may be mistaken, but it looked like Kim was consistently outdriving Garcia during the Ryder Cup and on some holes, by a wide margin (unless Kim hit driver and Garcia, fairway wood).

If Kim was hitting it so long, he and Garcia are about the same height and build, maybe Kim has a little more mass. What's the key to Kim's length? Add in the fact that he chokes up on all clubs. Obviously, he's got a fast, aggressive turn.

you are correct by saying that sergio hit 3 wood a few times. but on the holes where they both hit driver, it was pretty neck to neck. sergio was also sick so he wasn't hitting with 100% of his normal power. also, his swing was a little bit off due to his sickness I would assume. I was at the Ryder Cup on Sunday and followed their match and i noticed the same thing

Kim outdrove Garcia when Sergio used his fairway woods, on the holes that he hit driver, he always outdrove Kim. They are both fantastic long ball hitters and hit 350 (Kim) and 365 (Garcia) on one of the holes. If you remember, Kim was always hitting the approach shots first putting the heat on Serg to hit one stiff as well.

JB hit a couple 350's and a 375.

Sure you're not thinking of Lee Westwood as the sick one? (Recovering from Tonsillitis.) I haven't heard about Sergio being sick, but absolutely correct me if I'm wrong.

Sergio was recovering from the flu or something. It's why he skipped the Saturday foursomes session.

That's not entirely true. Kim outdrove Sergio on the second hole, for example - and there were other instances, too.

Ahh yes. When Anthony Kim's name comes up, everyone mentions his habit of choking down on clubs. He has said that when he was young lad learning the game, he used his father's clubs which were longer and heavier, hence the choking. This habit seems to have stayed with him. Apparently, Nike had custom fitted irons built for Kim, however not to his liking. From what I can see on TV, it seems as if his clubs are 1"-2" longer. Choking down on them would in effect mean that they aren't substantially longer than the rest of the guys on tour.

So, can anyone confirm whether Garcia was sick or tired on the Saturday?
All I know is that when he played AK on Sunday afternoon he just had one look about him: shell-shocked .

Thanks for explaining this, it had me stumped! But forget about his driving for a while... his iron shots into the greens are awesome!

Yeah, the longest JB hit was that 381 monster drive(I had to rewind my TiVo to see if I heard that correctly). He did hit several that were 360-375.

This guy is incredible! He wouldn't embarrass himself at all, at a pro long drive competition.

i thought westwood had the blisters. everyone had excuses..

also, how are these guys hitting 350+ yard drives? i would assume these are down wind dog legs? 300 yards is understandable, but 350+ is crazy...!!

You are correct sir. This gave me an excuse to watch it all over again

and I took notes. Hole... yds...Garcia... No info, only showed putting 13( 3w )352... 255 ... 230 Drives won: Garcia 3 Kim 4 Each also won a 3W off the tee. Kim was much more accurate. Garcia hit rough on 1, unplayable on 6, bunker on 9 which cost him distance. Regardless, they both were incredible and it was my fav match of the day. Westwood had blisters and needed his diaper changed. Garcia was on antibiotics, possibly due to flu. He requested to be sat out on Sat. Contrary to popular belief, many PGA Pro's can hit well over 300-350yds. They just don't due to course conditions and try to put themselves in better scoring opportunities. This course was cut for the long hitters. Zinger had the rough cut down so his bombers could go for the long one's without fear of losing the ball into a bad lie in the rough. Even Perry at 48 hit 350.

In terms of driving distance , Kim outdid Garcia yesterday but couldn't hit a fairway to safe his life: water, trees, rough, corporate tents and one spectator's forehead all found Kim's golf-ball yesterday.

Kim's clubs are actually lofted a club stronger than standard. For example, the loft on a Nike Blade 5I is 29*. His are 26* and so on. He has great balance with his swings and is really strong in his base.

Funny, though, how speculation was if he was good enough to win, this year. Now its, is he good enough to tame Tiger.

you know how the media is... it's always who can beat Tiger? Why... because no one is even close on a regular basis. It kind of drives me crazy the way they always play up this chasing Tiger BS... the media should all just shut up and accept the fact that it probably won't happen and not even talk about it until someone is within a few points on the World Ranking (when Tiger's healthy) and has won a few majors.

To be honest, Garcia just didn't have his head in the game and Kim did,
so maybe that effected the distance they both hit their drives

    • Day 316 - More swings, full backswing and full finish.
    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
