I'm considering* buying a set of graphite Pings. When I mishit with steel I immediately feel it my elbows, but with graphite this isn't a problem. However, the vast majority of golfers I've seen use steel shafts, so I wonder if there are any drawbacks with graphite?

I play with steel probably for the reason most people do, feel. God knows with my handicap I should be more worried with direction..er... scratch that... actually hitting the ball than feel, but I figure as I continue to improve, I'll start to notice the feel more.

It is my understanding that graphite shafts tend to be less predictable in their distances from shot to shot.

Hopefully someone more skilled than I can back up my unsubstantiated ruminations.

I play graphite because I have had some bad tendinitis in my forearms. Steel shafts seem to exacerbate it, graphite not so much. I haven't found them to be less accurate, but it may be a bit harder to get the right flex because there isn't really an equivalent to a DG S300. Even if they are a little less accurate, the fact that I can play without pain is worth it.

Graphites would give slight more distance and less stress on your joints. However, if you want steel shafts you could use DG sensicore or cushin inserts with Ping irons. People usually choose steel shaft on irons due to better accuracy but graphites are perfectly fine IMO.

Count me in. All clubs, with the exception of the putter, have graphite shafts. Probably ignorance on my part, but I BELIEVE the graphite shafts on driver, hybrids and irons have the right amount of flexability and kick to maximize distance for me.

Again, probably a completely unfounded deduction on my part, but they work for me!

I had graphite shafted irons not too long ago, and I pretty much hated them. They were definitely easier on the hands on mis-hits, but I could not be near as accurate with them as I was with steel shafter irons. I believe the graphite shafted irons flaxed to much during my swing....however, thats just me. I have friends and family that love their graphite irons. To each their own.

What's the reason graphite shafts are less accurate? I've been thinking about getting a new set of irons because I've been using my father's clubs and he's starting to get back into golf so will be using them more. If someone could list some pros and cons of graphites and steels it would be much appreciated .

You will loose a lot of "feed back" with graphite shafts. Thats the only draw back I know of. With that said, I prefer steel.

Maybe your shafts are too stiff?

I've been using graphite shafts on everything but my SW and LW for the last 10 years. I'm no less accurate than I was with steel, my distances are just as consistent.

If graphite is so inaccurate, why does everyone use it in their drivers these days???? Why would you build the poorest accuracy into the club that hits the ball the farthest? All that would do is hit farther off line.

The better modern graphite shafts are just as accurate as any steel shafts... the only real difference is feel. It's all about what floats your boat...

    • They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me
    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
    • Distances look fine, no?
    • Day 207-12 Wider backswing and arm reconnecting in downswing. Did a much better job with proper wrist movements through downswing today.
