Well I just got the new ipod touch, and I was checking Apples application store and found a golf application that uses the Ipods motion sencor to tell the brake of the green, it is called the break meter. Is this leagal by the USGA rules.

I used the app for play today and I have never putted better, I will suggest laying your iPod or Iphone somewhere in the middle of you line so you will have a balanced read not just of the first foot of your putt. I also will suggest spend a couple of hours practicing with it before you take it out for play so you will know the amount of break every degree makes.

laughed when i read this post, especially break on your desk, do you putt on your desk?

i reckon this is a novelty that will quickly wear of as it cannot be used and greens change

i am like gadgets but its like the camera on my mobile i took a lot of pictures years ago but now i dont bother - mobile tv etc

This is a novelty as you point out; however, I'm concerned that gadgets are becoming relied on more and more... and our brains less and less. Imagine... .8° uphill and 6.1° left to right... still gotta putt it.

Is it me; or... are these gadgets taking those who use them further from the "simplicity" of the game into a technological quagmire of thought and time? Now we need a algorithm from a instrument that, in essence, is replacing what the brain does automatically if you use it? I see kids using calculators today to calculate what 9 X 9 is? When I ask, "can't you figure that out in your head?" I get... "The teacher wants us to know how to use the calculator to get the right answer - sometimes we get the wrong answer using our heads." Now most of us are addicted to our GPS/laser yardage units. Many of my friends rely so much on the laser that they can no longer judge distances because it's "too hard on the brain." Well, I've rambled... Neat? Yes! Necessary? Nope! Waste of time and takes one further from the purity game. IMHO

Oh for God's sake. You have got to be bloody well joking.

If anyone I was playing with started putting a freaking mobile phone on the green and claimed it helped them to read putts I'd either stand on it or walk off the course. What is this game coming to?

Dude, I was joking. That's what the little smilie with the tongue out indicates

I seriously doubt I'll use it in a round with others, but I might play with it on the putting green or when out playing solo.

are you incpabable of reading a green? how do yo ever decide when you have a double breaker? i mean do you have to say, "hand on fellas, lemme walk up here and take another measurement" only to then step up and leave the putt short becuase you took so long to read teh putt?

Would you have to go back to the old method if taking these readings would cause you to walk on someone elses line? Or if you had to set this down on the green to read it, wouldn't that fall in the lines of touching the line with your putterhead?

It would sure suck to have to squat down and read the breaks by eye!
