Rate my progress

here's what used to happen when i would swing a golf club. not real pretty but it's what i knew since i was ten with no proper intruction, and i was fairly effective with it.



here's what i have now. what i do is go to the range and hit some balls, video my swing and compare to youtube to either tiger, AK, or trevor immelman's swing. then come home and realize i wasn't even close so i do it again and again and again for the last couple of months and this is what i have. i'm just trying to copy what they are doing. i know its not a duplicate for sure but my ball striking has improved dramatically, in distance and accuracy. Then only thing i feel when i swing is a turn away and a turn through. i know i still have a little slide foward at start of downswing but not as bad as it was. but just let me know in general if you guys see something i should be working on that i'm not seeing. After a quick look I can see that your tempo is significantly better. On the first video, I noticed you had a pretty quick backswing but it was much better in the last video. Also, hell of a divot on that last vid.

One little thing for you:

Try to be as relaxed as possible on your setup. Tension is good during the actual swing, as it leads to power, but in your setup your arms and hands seem to be pretty tight. It's not a very close up view, so I can't tell for sure, but next time you practice make sure you pay attention to it.

Having tight muscles is something that can easily go unnoticed because we're thinking about a hundred different things before and during the swing.

So it is very important to be in a relaxed state of mind while playing. I have found it to be fairly effective.

Have you posted on Swing Academy? You do a little drill or waggle like mine. I actually take it back about 2/3 and watch the club rise on plane. I also make sure the left wrist is flat. The rehearsal helps me a lot. One thing I thing I have to watch out for when I go through this rehearsal is dipping the front shoulder which can creep into my swing.

I think you've got a pretty good, natural swing. The only things that I would say are: 1. When you address the ball and then slide the club up to the ball, it looks to me like the initial point you slide from is where you should actually be at address. Maybe you are a little too far away from the ball. 2. That rehearsal thing you do with the stiff wrists and snagging doesn't look relaxed to me. I would try to loosen that up a bit - but I know you're doing your version of the Mike Weir thing. 3. A bit of a forward press might relax you a little. 4. If that's a 7 iron, I think the ball might be a tiny bit too far back in your stance - maybe only an inch. Just my initial thoughts. I can say a lot of good things in your swing. Good luck!! P.S. Very nice of you to be hitting off that nasty bare patch with all that lovely grass around you!

On your most recent face on video, you're swaying far too much on the backswing. Try shifting your weight to your back foot without moving your hips and body. Other than that though, your swing looks pretty good. I must say you put everything into it which can cause a loss of consistency but if you can control it then that's fine.

i do feel i swing fairly hard, i used to have a problem with balance but not as bad now. do you guys think if i lag more and use more hands i can swing easier as far as throwing my weight around or will i have more control swinging with my body more? -matt

You sway back into your right or back side in the backswing. Your right leg goes straight ver quickly and you just let your hips roll over to the outside of the back leg. One thing will help with this problem. Do not lose the flex in your back leg or in other words do not straighten your back leg on the backswing. Set your flex at address and maintain it all the way to the top of your backswing. That will eliminate some of the sway and keep you from changing your spine angle. Also resist letting the back knee rotate back. Your hips will still rotate but not as much. You need the resistance to get a good coil of your upper body. You should feel tension from the ground up the inside of your back leg as you rotate back.
