I've seen a lot of "get fitted" advice on here, but I've been told by more than one pro that getting fittted when you are not good doesn't do anything for you. I'm not disagreeing with anyone on here, just passing on my own experience. I do agree that lessons with the right person can be great. I've had a lot of trouble find a good teacher tho..

So, on to clubs..

When I got back into golf I bought a set of used Ping Eye 2's and transitioned to the Adams A2OS. I liked the Adams so much I now have the A3OSs. I can easily reccomend the Adams gear and would look at the A3OS or A4OS.

Good luck!

I agree getting fitted before your handicap is even measurable is probably not needed. I would suggest getting 3 wedges maybe a 52, 56, and a 60. Your score will drop like a rock if you can learn to hit it close within 100 yds. I have been practicing my short game a lot lately and my score was around 100 avg per game and now a good round puts me in the mid to low 80's.

I got the 08 big bertha irons 5 weeks ago and find them very forgiving, I played a round a week ago keeping track of contact points and even on toe hits and thin hits my shots were very playable. That was my biggest problem and with extra forgiveness vs. my old blades I am seeing improvements in my game. I picked up 6-P + there 50deg. A-wedge.

You are actually playing with a pretty good set right now, because after 2004 club manufactures havent come up with something that was really revolutionary. I would also get on the wedges and new putter boat.

There are various styles of super game improvement irons out there, so I would agree that you should hit all you can and decide if you like the all hybrid types (Cleveland Hi-bore XLi), the wide sole irons (Ping G10), mixed hybrid/wide sole (Adams A4OS, Cobra Transitions), something titanium (Ping V2 and others) or a traditional Over Size set (Wilson Di7). I know TGW.com will give you 30 days to trade your purchase back in if you are not satisfied for full price store credit.
Dick's has a pretty good selection and they can fit you there and you can order a set make up that suits your game. I can't say what you should get, but if you catch them thin then you should get something that has it's mass/CG as low as possible, maybe the Cleveland XLi, but that's your call. BTW, Jack Nicholson hits the Hi-bore irons, that's got to count for something ...... jmoc

I'd have to disagree. Pre 2004 I don't think there was one manufacturer of "hybrid Iron" sets. Now there are several players. IMHO hybrid sets have changed the game for high handicappers and newbies.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
