During a softball game a few weeks ago I ran into the fence, left arm outstretched for the catch, and smashed my side into the top rail. A couple days later it started feeling as if I had bruised my ribs or pulled a muscle. Played a round the next week and only made it through 9 holes, not able to stand upright and take deep breaths. I used a heating pad every night for 2 weeks and it seemed to help. Then this morning something happened and it tightened up again. It keeps me from making a rotation in the swing (obviously) but, worse, it's VERY frustrating. Anyone dealt with this and have a "quick" fix? Stretching, heat/ice, drugs...

Get an X-ray. Sounds like you broke a rib. That is not going to heal very soon.

If you have had it for more than 2 weeks then it must be something serious! By the nature of the symptoms it sounds like you have a broken rib or even broken ribs! Get an xray as the shortness of breath is a typical sign of broken ribs!

I also think that you should consult a physician. Sometimes a hairline crack might also be very painful.

yeah, figured there was no quick fix...scheduled x-rays for tomorrow, back on the heating pad tonight. Got 2 rounds planned this weekend so I'll suck it up. Thanks for the replies.

you wouldent have any broken ribs as these are real painful. what you prolly have is a cracked rib and or a pulled muscle in which case there is nothing you can do about it except bare the pain or stop playing sport till healed.

You should see your doctor if it isn't getting any better. Sounds like a rib fracture or strained abdominal muscle. If you can press on your chest and have point tenderness over one rib, with painful breathing, then it's probably a fracture. If it is more diffuse pain with twisting or bending, then it's a muscle strain. Pain control and rest are going to be the treatment for either of those. But don't take advice from an internet message board, just see your doctor.

Ditto... I had an intercostal injury and it took a long time to heal. Swing was almost impossible to do! Rest it up... its gettin' colder anyway....

yeah, it's getting colder but for Atlanta that's 50s...no breaks or fractures on x-rays, just a pulled muscle. A little/lot of Vitamin I(buprofen) and rest. After my 2 rounds this weekend, of course. Thanks for the replies.

    • Day 33 (20 Feb 26) - played the Friday men’s group shootout.  Solid day of working from some tough shot results - made for a good number of up and downs for par (8 of the 9 pars were such). Cart mate and I discussed the visual aspect of the game - and how much it plays into the individual’s mindset during the round.  Love when the discussion is focused on learning and taking positives away and not just how bad the miss may be.
    • Day 507 - 2026-02-20 Got some backswing work in on GEARS Hybrid.
    • Still kinda working on the backswing stuff. I can turn < 45°, but I tend to tilt toward the target a little. I can tilt away from the target, but I tend to turn a bit more. Case in point. I can do it, though: This I can do all day (it's more lateral than I want, but it's very linear): Here's what 38° of turn looks like. Almost freaking nothing.
    • Good progress. I am finally feeling like I am settling my weight into my right foot earlier in the backswing. Right hip sinks back, right leg feels staying flexed. Feeling very stable and firm in the right leg. I feel like I could do a good squat with that right leg. Very balanced.
    • oops, forgot Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  And two more of the original Open rota, Prestwick and Musselburgh (with hickory shafted rentals).  And Muirfield.  And maybe a few more, I'll check my list when I get home.
