In the meanwhile, until you get some regular golf buddies at most of the local public courses (Algonkian, Twin Lakes, Greendale, Pohick, Brambleton, etc.) a single can walk-on - sign up with the starter and get assigned to a group that has less than four players. The waiting time can vary from almost immediate to an interminable wait. You know, this might have gone the way of the dodo bird - see next paragraph for the way it probably is now.

Nowadays I think it's possible to sign up online as a single if other groups of less than a foursome have signed up. Of course you have to find a tee time service used by the local courses and register/pay the fee with them. As a matter of fact this would be a better alternative than going to the course and getting on the waiting list if you can do this. By doing this you would have a tee time and wouldn't have to wait around upon arrival at the course. I used to do this (go to the course & get on the walk-on list) when I was living in Alexandria. The earlier I got to the course the more likely to get off within a reasonable time. Also, I was on a work schedule where I got every other Friday off so I'd walk-on on a lot of Fridays when the wait was even shorter. This was a great way for me to get in extra rounds when my regular foursome wasn't planning on playing and I'd meet some very interesting people. For example, once I got into a group with two Brits who were with the Embassy in D.C. One was a male, the other a female and the female was an excellent golfer as well as an excellent playing partner. I don't know, but there's a chance there are some DoD golf leagues around you could hook up with. Just ask coworkers and anyone you bump into in the cafeteria or on the "E" ring (well, if you're in the Pentagon). Another thought - Fort Belvoir has a couple of courses as does Andrews Air Force Base. As retired A.F. you might be able to find some playing partners at one of these military bases. And, you might want to look into the Army-Navy Country Club. They have a course in Arlington & another in Fairfax. Best wishes from a former Washingtontonian/Alexandrian!

Thanks for those tips Q.Q.!

I have been going the "walk-on" route Greendale, Hilltop, etc & it has worked out good. I have also played at Andrews & Belvoir. The courses at Belvoir are tough.

I work in Crystal City but go to the pentagon almost every day so I know what you mean by the "E" ring. I have a couple buddies in MD that I play with over there.

Thanks again!

    • Day (2 May 24) - somehow I missed posting both Tues and Weds practice sessions - so the streak ends and a new one begins…. Focus today was on ball first contact using the Divot Board for reference.   Worked with 7i, 9i and GW hitting hard foam balls.  Started hap hazardly and then settled back into my pre-shot setup.  Much more consistent in the latter.
    • So, Newey is out at Red Bull. Where does he go in a year? Is Max still with RBR in 2026? Hmmmm.
    • August 2010 Woodfin Ridge 18th hole Playing in a large tournament with a slew of friends and the last day was two man best ball. The 18th, when it was bent grass, was very fast due to a steep slope on the right side. I had seen many people over the years putt off the green from above the hole. I hit a great drive and 3W to 30’ left of the hole. With everyone watching my partner hit it way too fast and never high enough and his ball rolled all the way to the bottom of the green.  I hit mine much higher and the ball came to rest about 20” above the hole. Then it slowly started trickling towards the hole for a walkoff eagle! Nobody said anything except my partner who was yelling pretty loudly. I looked at the crowd and told them it was okay to clap because it was a great putt, and they gave me a bunch of polite golf claps and brought me a beer!
    • Day 127: 5/2/24 Stack Full Speed spectrum training session 6/24. Training speed was 5 mph higher than previous high, as was e-speed. Still not as high as I have done in previous programs, but just 1 mph lower. Battling through a neck issue, and possible trigger fingers. Happy with results.
    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
