hey im 16 years old and i am inspiring to be a pro golfer some day and my swing at the moment is very good and i am shooting very low scores lately. Played to -1 only 2 weeks ago and +2 yesterday. I am one of those golfers that had to work really hard to get where i am right now. Only this time last year i was playing off 28 and it was only then i decided this is what i want to do and this is what i want to be good at and earn a living out of it. I have practising nearly every day over the last year and it just shows you can do anything you put your mind to which i have done. Okay anyway, this topic is about average distance of your golf clubs you hit. I am a bit skeptical about how far i hit especially with my irons. I am not sure if im hitting them far enough. I hit my 7 iron around 150, 6 iron 160 5 iron 170 and 4 iron 180 and my 3 wood about 190. Driver about 280 but thats fine for me. I notice when i watch the pros on tele some can hit there 6 irons 200 yards and i just dont now how they are doing this because i have a very good swing( very similar to anthonys kims) and i know i am getting good club head speed.

One thing my dad said the pros may be doing is something called lag which is like you get your hands very far ahead of the ball on impact and and you catch the ball with a delofted club face. I have been trying this in the range lately and all i do is slice the ball whenever i try to make lag. Any tips? Or should i just not worry about this?

don't worry about your distances at all. as long as you know what distance each club hits then you can play your game, and play it very well. pro's also lift alot of weights, have coaches just for their swing, and all sorts of other extra stuff that regular players like us don't have the luxury of. also, i find that the more i swing the stronger i get and my distances increase 10-20yards throughout the course of my 2month high school season. don't worry too much and keep playing your game.

p.s. i also aspire to be a golf pro

Those are great questions. From my point of view, between 150 and 280, you have it dialed in. I wouldn't worry about the number club it takes you to hit 200 as long as you have a club you can hit 200. Driving the ball 280 is excellent a your age as well. As far as the lag goes, taking a live lesson from a professional or an online lesson at the 10thGreen can give you answers as to where the slice is coming from. If you are hitting the 3 wood 190 yards, perhaps a subtle adjustment will make all the difference in the 10 yards you are coming up short with the 3 wood. If you can hit the driver 280, I would think you can hit the 3 wood 190 to 220.

Don't have the time to search the forums right now but there was a thread on here about how far the pros hit that went something like this:

X golfer had a 200 yard approach asked for his 7-iron, caddie handed him his 5-iron and signaled to the broadcaster 9-iron. X golfer hits it spot on 200 yards onto the green. (with a 9-iron according to television)

Bit of slight exageration there to make the point.

Firstly 28 handicap to -1 in a year never heard such rubbish in all my life. You are either cheating or playing rubbish golf courses.Secondly if you were genuinely able to shoot those scores you would be able to hit the ball a lot further.Stop lying

Posted
Another thing you can hit a 3 wood 190 but can hit your driver 280.You are obviously a liar or else you know nothing about golf.Genuine low handicaps would only average 10-20 yards longer with their driver compared to their 3 wood. And most low handicappers would be able to hit a long iron 200 plus yards

You need an attitude check. I have a low handicap and I can not even hit a so called 3 wood. I carry a 17* that I hit about 240 or so. My driver goes about 270-280 carry. I can not hit a long iron either. My 200 yard club is my 5 iron off a tee. From the fairway I do not have a 200 yard club. I carry no 4 iron right now. I do have a 3 hybrid that goes 215. I own a 13* that I can rip off a tee but no chance of the deck. Check your attitude. Maybe he can putt and gets up and down like Tiger. If you miss every green and get up and down 15 times you will shoot 75 on a par 72. There are many ways to score in this game.

29 shots in a year. The guy thinks he has a swing like anthony kim.he is wondering why he cant hit the ball as far as them.He is a liar and dont be so naive

Put it this way Ireland is a small country if he was doing this everyone would know. And I know because I play all the boys championships over here.

Since when is 9.6 a low handicap?

Irish golf is run by one body the gui.If this guy is for real everyone would know about him? Why,because the gui provide boys/youths competitions for low handicap golfers. If he was for real he would be playing in these competitions hence people would know him.Secondly he is a liar because if he had that handicap he would be getting free coaching and the use of practice facilities from the gui.Thirdly he says he has a swing in comparison to Anthony Kim who cares. He wonders why he cant hit the ball like the pros , let me tell you why it takes years and years of coaching and practice and then you need the talent. This guy is having a laugh. No one talks like that in Ireland. There are many golfers younger than him with better handicaps and yet they would laugh at the way he can hit a 3 wood 190 and yet he can drive it 280.Please dont tell me to get a attitude check you ignorant moron you no nothing about Irish golf. And I dont know what it is like in America but in Ireland there is a lot of cheating among the youth...

While i do agree that 29 to 3 is a strech, I am no one to say it's not possible. I've been playing for a year and a half and im down to around 6 which is pretty good. Also i noticed i gained 2-3 strokes this summer, because i never played. I should be around scratch now, but i only played once a week in summer.

Guys I know it is hard for you to comprehend because you live in America(I am merely suggesting that America is huge nothing sinister)but in Ireland because we are a very small nation every one in the golf circle knows each other. If this kid really got down from 28 to 3 in a year it would be all over the news in the papers etc. This kid is winding you up

graham,

sounds like your off to a good start......if you want lag.......watch sergio garcia in slow motion....best lag on tour......as for distances.......play your own game.....but keep this in mind....when the pros hit a 7 190 or 205 many reasons.......but they hit a 7 like its a 5...with the way compression happens

go slow...play your own game

thats y there is more then 1 club...in the bag

Graham,

I don't hit my irons as far as some people do. I have found that knowing how far you hit your specific number iron is more important than how far you hit it.

If you are in between clubs, that is where a 9 O'Clock swing comes in. As an example, If I am 100 yards out, I have two or three clubs which could work.
It might be a full wedge, an 80% pitching wedge or a 50% 8 iron.

Hope this helps.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.

    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
