Currently, my little mini set only has a SW, which i believe is 56.

When I get a new set, it will definitely have a PW, but im debating whether to get an in between wedge, or just stick with two,

Right now I can play most shots with a SW, never reallyuse my 9 iron except for once or twice a round.

So can I make do with only 2, or will 3 help my game a ton?

The extra slot would likely go toward a wood or hybrid.

If you have an unacceptably large distance gap between the PW and SW you can add a gap wedge. My distance gap is acceptable so I don't carry a gap. I also carry a lob wedge, but sometimes I think I had a better short game when I just hit SW for all short shots.

You definetly can, i would suggest going with a sand either 54 or 56, and a lob, either 58 or 60.

I experimented for a while with 54 60 64, and it was honestly too much for me, it was too many options, i have since learned to just open the face of the 60 for lob shots, hit down on it harder for spinnier shots, and can play check or run shots with the 54.

If you can learn how to take advantage of your 60* it is probably going to be the most important club in your bag (besides your putter), so I would suggest you pick one up.

I currently play a 48 PW, 54 SW and a 58 LW.

I like this set up for my game, but I can certainly see where 4 wedges is nice, too....especially when you take different bounce amounts into consideration.

From my set, though, my 54 SW is my workhorse. I'll pull that sucker out in a skinny minute when I've got any greenside play. Very versatile club for me....at least on the course I generally play.

I agree with this poster. I'm a 14 handicap who has experimented with different set ups and I do best when I leave the lob wedge at home. I carry PW, Gap wedge and Sand wedge.

the gap wedge ain't a bad idea, just make sure when you get one especially when you get a game improvement set... watch the loft... because most game improvement sets have a pitching wedge between well 43 and 46 degrees... I figure 45 as an average, and a sand wedge has 56 degrees... so don't automatically get a 52 degree wedge on that front... my pitching wedge is 48 (1 degree weaker than standard)

IMO I don't like the gap in my short game. for my next set once saved it will have driver then 3W then irons. depending on what the cost is for hybrids in 3 maybe 4. But that's just me. I would rather have a gap in the distance that I mostly use for 2nd shot lay ups on Par 5's than having a gap in short game and have to choke up or let off a long club. then again I am more and more learning that I don't like my 60 so I don't know if I would deal with 50, 54, 58 or what to me seems another good option is 52, 56 and have something long as well. All in all it may not be best to leave that much a gap. or you may be able to lighten up shots then two wedges may be all you need.

I don't suggest a 60* they are to inconsistant although if you want more loft than a 56* you could try a 48*, 54*, 58*. But even a 58* is a bit to lofty.
You can play all the shots you need with a 56* & 48*, with abit of practice you can hit flop/ lob shots with your 56* that can get up and over any bunker & stop dead.
I don't really use my 52* for short game, so i suggest you only get one if you have a big gap between your PW & 56*
I don't think that a lob wedge would help your game unless you aren't the best bunker player they defianantley make it easyier to get out of bunkers.
I play a 47*, 52* & 56* i recomend that set-up but in the end it comes down to what you feel comfortable with, try out some wedges & work out what you like

I think it comes down to the distance off the tee. If you're a "bomb and gouger" you'll need more wedges. I do just fine with just a PW and SW. I feel you can get a better feel for distance with just the two but everyone is different.

I would wait until you choose the new set, then decide based on the loft of the new PW.

I played an old set that had a 50* PW for a long time, so when I got my new set with a 46* PW, I got the 50* GW and dropped the 3i. My SW is 56*. I don't use a 60*.

Agreed...I'm longer than most (which isn't always an advantage), and enjoy my 4 wedge set-up: 48-52-56-60. Works good for me!

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
