I just scored this new set of Ben Hogan irons with hybrids for $178 by auction. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BEN-HOGAN-GO...713.m153.l1262
From what I read, they are supposed to be a great game improvement set for the intermediate golfer. I am still waiting for their arrival to play them. I can't wait.

I am upgrading from a used set of Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scot irons I bought a couple years ago from dallasgolf.com

In my stand bag:
Driver: XR-03
Irons: Apex Edge CFT (5-E)
Hybrids: Apex Edge CFT (3-4)

Be careful of "new" equipment on Ebay. A large majority of it is fake. None of the name brand manufacturers allow their stuff to be sold on Ebay.

I would suggest you look for the previous model new stuff (whatever model came before the newest.) For example, when Callaway came out with the x-20 irons, you could get a great deal on a set of x-18s. I have had excellent results dealing with www.3balls.com for stuff like this.

you could also get like last year's models... The R7's work really good... I have the TPs, but the r7s regulars work really good for a higher handicap... but i'd recommend the R7 draw... even an older Adams model would work too like the GT3s or GT500 if cost is an issue... I have a set of GT2s that get regular play... and have had them for 4 years with no problems... so if you want to go that route you can.

I think you have good selections, the a2's sound like a deal and you get your hybrids. I agree with getting last years models, I have the r-7 425 that I got a good deal on from rockbottomgolf. I like my cleveland wedges and they have some older models like the 588's for pretty cheap on outlet at golfsmith.

I know this thread is older, so you may have already made a purchase. I would like to at least make you aware of the option of clone clubs. They are not for everyone. A lot of people have their negative opinions about them, but a lot of people have extremely positive experiences with them, too. The key is to get the clone clubs from a reputable place ( pinemeadowgolf or gigagolf ). I myself am going to purchase a set of irons and a wedge or two from pinemeadow for Christmas. I am a beginner and with school I only get to play 1-2 times a month, however I only am taking 9 credits next semester and plan on playing a lot more. I currently play with my dads old clubs and some of the irons are different brands/types. I really need some consistency but don't how the money for big named clubs. My roommate has a pinemeadow sand wedge and likes it a lot. I have swung it and it is a solid club ($20). I would at least take a look at their sites and see if this is something you are interested in, you can definitely get a full set for about $400 there.

The pros to clones - Save a lot of money, customizable, provide similar feel of name brands that you could try in stores, 30-day warranty from the two aforementioned sites so if you don't like em, return em.

cons - no resale value, no nice brand name people will recognize

what kind of scores do you post? how seriously do you play? Are you looking to take up golf seriously and looking to break 80? all i think are important questions to ask. Also, the answers will tell you what you really need in your bag...most beginners box sets come with a driver, 2 fairways and 3-pw, and i suspect that is why you originally said you wanted these clubs. but if for instance you can't hit long irons and you hardly ever pull them out on a course, why pay for them? same goes for fairway wood. i was in the same situation you are about two years ago when i bought new clubs. i couldn't hit driver or long irons really well...i started off with a set of nickent 3dx redbacks 3 and 4 hybrid and 5-pw. also bought a 56 and 60 degree wedge from adams. played a bunch of short exec courses in my area to gain consistency. after a few months of practicing i found that i hit my hybrids a good distance, 210-215 on my 4h and 225ish on my 3h. so instead of spending money on fw's i just bought a driver, the hibore xl had just come out and scored a great deal on the original hibore.

i seriously recommend gigagolf, a friend of mine just bought the pursuit forged irons and i've had a chance to hit them, they are great for low to low-mid handicappers...i'm sure all they're products are strong as well.

in my bag:

Driver: '08 Cobra F Speed LD 10.5 w/UST Proforce V2 Tour Flight stiff

Fairway: Adams Speedline Fast10 3-wood w/Aldila Wasabi stiff
Hybrid: Nickent 3dx 3H
Irons: Nike CCI forged 4-pw Wedges: Nike Victory Red 52 56 60 Putter: Rife Mr. Beasley Balls: Bridgestone B330-RX Tees: epoch

If you want decent equipment for that price you're going to have to go used, which really isn't a big deal because it's all going to be used eventually. Right? And if you're not going to play any more than a few times a year, who really cares if it's new or not.

lol it's kind of funny cause I bought this EXACT, every iron, wood, and driver BUT I also received great big bertha driver, white hot 2-ball putter, and a basically new taylor made bag... all for $170

edit: although it didnt come with the TM rescue... but I bought a 3H heavenwood separate.
Driver: 3dx driver 10.5*
Irons: 3dx hybrid irons 5-P
Iron: X-14 3 iron
Wood: MT 4wood 16.5*

    • Day 125 12-15 Half swings with flow drill. Focused on rhythm, loading trail side then getting to lead side correctly. Hit a few foam balls but mostly drilling without ball.
    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
