During my second round today, my "beloved" Steelhead driver developed a rattle . This is a Steelhead "reissue", essentially a Steelhead Plus with gray paint. I was wondering if I could fix the rattle myself. There seems to be a plastic/epoxy plug in the bottom rear of the club. I was thinking of drilling this out and putting some "gorilla snot" or hot glue in the clubhead, then replacing the plug. Would this work? I have already tried heating the clubhead up, which worked until I hit a ball in the yard. I have other drivers(BB460, GBBII 415, Hawkeye VFT), but this is the one that I hit most accurately and consistently(my 3 and 5 woods are Steelhead reissues also). Any advice would be appreciated.

That appears to be about how you go about it.

Some golf shops offer a "anti-rattle" kit, that's a foam of sorts to stop this.

You'll have to read up on the instructions, I've not done one myself.

riddle me this..

when you move the drive up and down, liek if the head is pointing to the sky, and then you move it so the grip is pointing to the sky, can you hear it move up and down the shaft?

If so, get a razor blade, and cut out some of your grip. just small circles around the already existing circle. keep cutting out circles until the peice falls out. Thats what i did with my dads hibore XL that had some dried glue from when i reshafted it. The grip looks kinda odd wiht a hole in it, but its better than rattle!

Don't tamper with the club and call Callaway immediately, they might replace the club for you with something else. Its worth a try first. I had a two ball putter and the white face came off and they replace the putter with a new one.

I completely agree with ks8829. I can recall a plethora of examples where something of mine broke, but I was in such a hurry to use it that I attempted to "perform surgery" on it, causing further damage and, of course, voiding the warranty. To put it bluntly, there really isn't much of an alternative option to sending it back to the manufacturer, and, seeing as it's a Callaway, you'll probably have a fairly positive experience, because I've heard nothing but good things about their Customer Service. Good luck with your club situation.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thanks guys for the advice. I have contacted Callaway and am hastening a reply. I do not want to "tear" into the club if possible, because the rattle does not affect the playability in any way. It is just very annoying on my backswing to hear the rattle, which sometimes makes me jump early into my swing. In the meantime while I wait on a reply and possible resolution, I am pulling out the GBBII 415 9*. I really like this club but have had some problems with consistent distance. I have had a hard time(mental) getting used to the larger heads(my Steelhead is 205cc) and graphite shafts. I was still playing persimmon in 2000. The GBBII has an Aldila NV stiff shaft, that feels very similar to steel in the swing and impact. I think it my be time to get into the 21st century and start using this driver. Who knows I may even step up and start hitting my Big Bertha 460 that still has the plastic on the clubhead.

My "new" Steelhead driver arrived today and is the twin of my other one. I talked to Callaway a couple of days ago and they said the easiest thing for them would be to replace my driver. Apparently they have alot of the older club designs that are still essentially new, due to not selling. They did not have to do this, all I wanted was to fix the rattle. Needless to say, but I will anyway, Callaway Customer Service is excellent and possibly the best in the industry from my experience.

The only problem I have, is that I have been using the GBBII 415 and have started to figure it out. Man is it long compared to my old Steelhead, but not as straight...............YET.

    • Feel ≠ Real. 😁 For someone like me who has a lot of twist and little arm turn down. The feel is absurdly obnoxious. I hate it, but it works. I am sure for those who get a lot of hands down behind them, feeling the elbow a bit more in front of them makes sure they do not get stuck. Maybe better golfers tend to have that motion naturally, I may be able to see how that feel became something. 
    • At first glance - option 1 mainly because I’ve never played a dedicated par 3 and 18 holes of par 5’s, well l’m pretty sure  I would be exhausted from playing that length.  I have rarely made the green in two on a five, so not getting there in two is not a sore spot. At second glance, it’s still a par 3 with 6i max. 
    • Especially since the lead arm pins more against the chest in the early downswing before it releases down, in a lot of these high level swings.  But there is a difference between this trail elbow positioning: And this one: I wish they went into describing how exactly these two positions are different and why teachers use feels like "trail elbow more in front or under." 
    • #2, Golf would get really boring if you only play Par 3's. Par 5s let you have a lot more strategy and design to play with.  Also.. as a short hitter I'm normally laying up on the 2nd shot.
