When a putter is refered to as "face balanced" what exactly does that mean?

straight to the point, "face-balanced" is when the entire face is balanced. You can put the shaft over your first two fingers and if it stays straight, it is face balanced. They are mostly mallet putters and Yes! putters. This requires a straight-back and through swing. No arc or inside-paths because it isn't what it is supposed to do.

J.B. Holmes uses a face-balanced putter and tries to pull it to an inside arc. That was why he putted horribly today, if you saw any coverage.

Heel-Toe weighted are meant for an inside-path for a stroke and include most blade-type putters.

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!11

You can also get putters that are slightly toe weighted that'll balance with most of the face pointing upwards and ones that point straight down when you balance them. I've been told that both require some degree of arc in the swing so I assume that the ones that point straight down just require the arc to be more pronounced.

When you say "you can put the shaft over your first two fingers and if it stays straight, it is face balanced" are you talking about the shaft staying straight or the face? As in the head and the grip end of the putter are evenly weighted or the heel and toe of the face are evenly weighted? Sorry, I'm dense! Also, what advantage does face balancing provide - a smoother stroke?

Snake, it means the putter face should point upwards (you balance the putter horizontally on your finger and the face points upwards, or the toe drops down for a toe weighted putter). A face balanced putter is supposed to help with a straight back and through stroke.
