Does bigger necessarily mean better?

I have the Callaway 2004 big bertha (360cc, 10*), and I can hit the ball long and straight... what more could you ask for? Not to mention the fact that the ping of a perfect hit is loud enough to silence the driving range....

But with the new X460, 905, and r7 460 coming out, I might just consider getting one of the monster drivers.

So, does a bigger driver necessarily mean a longer, more accurate driver?

It does mean more stability on off-center impacts (increased MOI). And the larger the clubhead often the further back the center-of-gravity can be, which should lead to better trajectories with a driver (flatter, more boring). But if you hit what you have now fine, stick with it. Bigger heads are also a little tougher to square up at impact, etc.

I think the biggest advantage to going big is that the clubface and, hopefully, the sweetspot is larger, so off-center hits are not punished as much. The smaller heads can be just as long and accurate provided you hit the sweetspot consistently. Me, I need all the clubface I can get!

Reason asks, "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" But if you're like me, sometimes (OK, usually ) the little club ho on my shoulder wins out anyway.

Yeah, it probably does mean longer and straiter because of a bigger sweet spot. You'll hit the sweet spot or in the center of the sweet spot more often with a more forgiving head which will translate into longer drives. Make sure the right shaft is in whatever club you get so that it really does translate to distance and accuracy. Remember Tiger switching to a bigger head recently? He gained distance too... not that he's Mr. Accuracy.

It definitely means longer and straighter. I have a 905T and the new 905R Titleist drivers and the 905R gave me 12 yards more carry. The forgiveness is unbelievable and I am now more consistent in my drives than ever.

    • Maxfli Tour, shop dick’s deals, add $20 coupon when u spend $100, 4 Dzn for $90 plus tax and shipping…it’s def worth the exercise…let me know how they feel…or just buy a 3 pack to test…have to give them a try…not a better quality / price point out there right now in the ball market…
    • Interesting that no one is gaming the maxfli tour, whether the Tour, the S, or the X….it’s a quality urethane ball and a mid-level price sub $30 / dozen….and Maxfli Tour players out here….I will be playing it next summer as I just stocked up on them….4 dozen for $110 and Dicks has the occasional spend $100, get $20 off which drops it even lower…so far my preference is X just slightly ahead of Tour, and the S trailing pretty far behind…Like many of you, I have played many different balls over the years and trying to dial in a ball / price combo that works…so far the Maxfli Tour and Tour X are my front runners.     fyi, so far, dick’s is not paying me any promo / nil money, lol.   Happy New Year Y’all!
