hey, i just got back from the range, and was struggling to get a set position for my right thumb. so i was wondering, is there a precise, technically correct position for this thumb to rest, and does it actually affect the swing?

great question, i need an answer to this as well. i've experimented a Lot lately with various grip positions and pressures, and i've got one for my left hand that makes me go "this is it, this is DEFINITELY how i need to grip the club," but my right hand is still a mystery. i haven't hit on that "perfect" feeling yet.

I've got to admit I have not paid much attention to my right thumb compared to my left thumb. Hardly think about it at all really. Once I have the left thumb correct and place the life line of my right hand over the left thumb it just falls where it may. Usually left of center and just touching the index finger I think. Should I pay more attention?

the right thumb and the index finger are the last part of the body to touch the club. I would think they they are important for accuracy. I also think they should work together. I lightly pinch the two together during the swing

I also ensure the right index finger and thumb are just touching, there is a great article on the web to do with the pressure points of the grip I just can't find it at the moment will post it when I do.
