Blades vs Cavity Back

Hey I'm 14 and want a new set of irons. I'm a 10 handicap so do I want a blade or should I try a better players cavity back and what are some good sets of each?

JMHO...a player's cavity might be the way to go with your handicap. You obviously are able to strike the ball with some consistancy. Maybe you could look for a workable set of irons that could help you shave some strokes without overly punishing your bad hits. Some I would consider are Mizuno MP 52/57/60s, Titleist AP2, Callaway X20 tours, Ping S58 & 57s and I10s, TaylorMade R7 tps or Cobra Pro Cbs. That's just a short list of some of your newer options. Another set I would highly recommend, but am partial to since they are in my bag, is the Cleveland CG2s. I just think they are Cleveland's best player's cavities (more like a cavity muscle). But some love the CG golds as well.

Of course if you want to consider a blade you have lots of options as well. You will hear arguements both for and against them, none of which I can personally refute. My only advice in deciding is that you get as much range time as possible with what ever irons you are interested in before buying. And as always get your irons fitted.

There's a reason that a LOT of pros use cavity back irons rather than muscle back blades .... do yourself a favor and take advantage of technology .... find irons that you like and can play well and don't concern yourself with the name brand or if they're blades or not.

No one here can really tell you what you want, only your yourself can do that. However, we can make suggestions. I myself favor blades for their workability over cavity backs. Both have their pros and cons, most notably being that cavities are generally more forgiving while blades more workable and better control. Here are a few of my suggestions:

2) Buy the Mizuno combo set with mp33 up to 7 irons and get a set of cavity back, mp30
3) Buy the mp33 iron and get hybrids to fill in the gap

So my rough count says 15/25 are playing blades (or something pretty close). What does that mean for you?

Well... it should mean absolutely nothing. You aren't gonna get any "macho" points just because you're hitting a blade 2-iron instead of a hybrid. And if the face is a couple degrees open at impact, it won't matter if you're swinging a Tiger blade or a big Callaway shovel. The ball will go right.

I play blades and I love them. I've hit cavity irons that felt awful, and I've hit some that felt great. I've also hit blades that felt very harsh. It's simply a matter of confidence. You need to hit a bunch of different kinds of irons, and find something that works well. Period.

[NOTE: Just in case there are some blade-haters out there who don't like my assessment of the top 25 players.. lighten up guys. Even if my math/equipment is a little off, the point remains.. plenty of those guys still play blades. That was the point I was trying to make.]

Mizuno MP-30s. Nice clubs, good price. And they are pretty much right in between cavity-backs, and blades which would probably be perfect for you. Also check out some Titleists'.

Why not try a combo set like the Bridgestone J36? Full Cavity in the lower, split cavity in the middle and blades in the scoring irons.

Nike makes a combo set, too as does Titleist, if I am not mistaken.

I can tell you, from experience, that you will like the Bridgestones. They're simple a really nice, soft iron offering forgiveness, playability and feedback.

first thing you need to figure out is which end of your clubs you hit better - long irons or short irons? Im a tad squirrely with my long irons, but like to play darts with my short irons, so I agree with the comments so far about a combo set. Im playing TM Rac OS 3-6 irons, and TM TP MB 7-p. this gives me the forgiveness I need when cruising a longer shot and am trying to swing more fully, but allows the finesse I need to drop shots close with a tighter swing. the combinations that have been mentioned so far are all good options, go swing several and find a set that you like, then look for the combo version of it. buying used also helps you create that matched set you're looking for. hope that helps.

I play titleist 690mb blades but also own a set of 755 cavity backs. I don't notice much difference between them shotwize. A good shot is a good shot. Its the archer not the arrows so to speak. I will say this though whatever you get make sure they are forged soft steel not cast or forged stainless. 1025 carbon steele just feels so much better at impact. The 1025 is more of a woosh feeling while stainless is like a sharp click at impact. You can feel so much more of what's going on at impact with the soft carbon steel irons. It will make you a better player.

I just switched from Cobra 3100 i's to more of a players cavity back (Precept tour premium forged). Got 'em used even up swap. I was looking for a smaller head profile with more workabilty. They also have some pretty stiff shafts (rifle 6.5). Lost about one club length, but now I can work the ball a little better and my shots are a lot straighter. I made the swap so I could work on better mechanics and ball contact becasue I felt my old irons let me get away with mediocre swings. Just my $.02.

i switch off between players cavity and blades. But ive been hitting blades since i was 13. Im just gonna go out and say it if you want to learn how to hit a golf ball the right way just get blades. Only reason i went to players cavity was becuase my dad would not stop nagging about the blades "lack of forgiviness" . If you want percision and the ball to obey your evey command then get blades. If you want a mix with a tad of forgiviness get the players cavities. I would reccomend some mizunoor titleist for blades. And as for players cavitie only way to go is callaway x forged belive me
