OK, guys; I took up the game as a thirteen year old in 1959, but you've got me nonetheless.

What makes a putter feel "buttery," and why is that good?

I certainly wouldn't want a feeling of compression when striking a putt. I want to feel that the ball goes while the going is good.

Another thing that I'm not crazy about is putter offset. I'm afraid that I'll have the line when the shaft reaches the ball, but might lose it by the time the clubhead gets there! Again, it's wanting the ball to leave in a hurry.

the Yonex Super ADX Tour Forged Putter is the softest putter I've ever used. unbelievable feeling, which i think is mostly due to the shaft. its the putter that Mickelson used when he first started playing on the PGA Tour:

If you were to get that putter put a steel shaft in it, there is absolutely no reason to have a graphite shaft putter.

tell that to Phil Mickelson, Yonex, and the countless others who swear/swore by that putter. I would suggest trying it out before making that kind of a judgement. it really does have an amazing, buttery smooth feel to it...

I'm repeating this post because I'd really like to know what "buttery" means!

I agree that some people like the graphite shaft in a putter, but nowadays there is not one major manufacturer making a putter in which graphite is even offered as an option.

STX putters make/made a putter with a graphite shaft in it that was used pretty heavily on the Champions Tour. And UST makes graphite putter shafts, so some people like them. Yes, none of the major OEM's make putters with graphite shafts in them, but Yonex did . And Mickelson seemed to really like that putter. Its the smoothest putter I've ever used by far. And there are a lot of people out there who feel the same way. It must be a good putter if they are still selling them for over $200. I wouldnt bash it just because it has a graphite shaft in it. I was leary at first too, but after I bought one, I was glad I did.

Basically it means the putter has a really soft feel, it does not necessarily mean it feels like there is compression at contact.

i have a rife best putter u can buy period

I have a clone of the Rife. Actually, I wasn't supposed to get to use it until Christmas but while my parents were out I snuck it out and I absolutely love the feel. Perfect weight, and you can get the Lamkin versize PaddleGrip and it will be the best putter you will ever use. Maybe hyperbole, but thats what it is for me. Im gonna make some nice putts with that thing when I get out to the course.

I love my Rife, too. However, I don't like their flagship putter: the two bar and two-bar hybrid. It's more a look thing than anything else. And I'm not a huge fan of the insert on the hybrid. Deadens the feel too much for me, especially after playing my Beasley. That and the aiming notch on the Beasley is much easier to see than on the two-bar putters.

Rife's without inserts, Nike Unitized's, and Scotty's are the three types of putters I have enjoyed striking the most of everything I have tried to this point.

I think the graphite shafted putter setup is more popular in Asia. Make sense for a Japanese company like Yonex.

I used to have a Sanwa putter from Taiwan that had a graphite shaft. It actually putted pretty well.
