I received one of Golfsmith's Thanksgiving weekend coupons. They're offering 10% off on clubs. I'm interested in a new 3 wood. When I was checking out their prices on-line, it looks like almost all of the clubs are excluded from the 10% discount due to manufacturing agreements. Pretty worthless 10%.

My question is has anyone had any luck actually trying to use one these coupons in a physical store? Will they take it regardless of the club?

When I bought my nike hybrids I had a coupon for $50 off any purchase more than $250 - however nike was not on the excluded list for that one. When they scan the coupon it knows if it is valid on a particular club or not.

I received an e-mail from Sport Authority regarding 25% of their entire inventory so I was going to buy 3 boxes of PROV-1s but found out at the register that they exclude any golf equipment in small print.

I almost bought the PROV-1 for $29.99 plus tax per box but no go.

I've noticed the same thing on Golfsmith coupons. I have had two and couldn't use them for anything I needed.

    • I forget the specifics (irritatingly), but I remember recently watching a video where I think it was Nick Faldo was saying you can gauge the windspeed by how many paces it goes when you drop the grass. It was something along the lines of if you drop it from shoulder height, then 3 paces is about 10 yards of hurt into and 5 yards of gain downwind. 6 paces would be double that. It's obviously a pretty wide rule of thumb and if it's really windy you won't be able to find where the grass lands, but it was (or would be if I could remember it) quite a useful way to crystallize what used to be just oh it's windy and blowing that way. Then guessing.  I would think the helpfulness of throwing up the wind would depend on how tree-y the area is. On a flat links course with no trees around, the wind at surface I would expect to be a lot more similar to up higher, where trees around are going to whip it all over the place. Plus as @iacas said, even if peak height is 80-90 feet, that's still a large proportion of the time that the ball is below 60 feet in the air.
    • That's BS. 1 word remaining should mean one word remaining.
    • Yep - I'm with you.
    • I always say to people when asked, "I can, and have, shot anywhere between 74 and 104, sometimes on the same day." Not that I can play 36 holes anymore, but I once shot 37 on the front nine and 52 on the back and in just the past three weeks my scores, on the same course, were 77 - 96 - 79. The 77 was on a day when the temperature was in the high 90's, The 96 was on a day when the weather was perfect. Go figure! Among amateur golfers, I don't think it's that unusual to be inconsistent. That's why we do something else to make a living. Sometimes the swing just......goes away. Then it comes back. It's a maddening game.
