Just curious when hitting my driver if I swing more across the ball and not throughwhat effect would it have hook or slice.

At times I hit my driver really well. I use to have a terrible slice and I started changing my grip. I would turn my my left hand clockwise a little so I could see 2 knuckles and I have loosened my grip quiet a bit. Most of the time I am perfect straight but on ocassions I hit a draw. I either think I am swinging harder than normal or a friend says sometimes I come across the ball instead of through. Thanks

When you come across the ball with your driver, I would think you would generally slice the ball especially if you are comming outside to in.

I just recently changed my golf swing, I use to pull hook the ball. This is what I did to help make my golf swing more consistent and maybe it might help you.

1) I try to keep a neutral grip but with light pressure
2) I will tilt my right shoulder lower (right handed golfer)
3) I make sure my knees are always slightly bent to help make a good turn on my backswing
4) I will make sure that my left arm is straight on the backswing and remains straight, this has help me shorten my backswing and made me more accurate, make my solid contact with the ball.
5) I take the club back nice and slow to ensure that I make a full turn
6) I start my backswing with my hip and begin to uncoiling
7) I will extend my arms
8) my wrist will automatically break and help create more speed in the swing.
9) my head will remain behind the ball because I already preset my weight slightly on my back because of the shoulder tilt.

Extending the arms and the natural wrist breaks creates more speed in your golf swing so you acutually feel like you are swinging easier and just completing the turn or uncoiling of your golf swing but you are generating more club head speed and making more solid contact and more distance on your shots.

I found that this swing has made me more accurate with all my club and hitting the ball better than ever solid and more important consistently. The golf swing is an easy swing that we make complicated.

Don't you mean downswing in #6?

When I hook the ball. The flight is more lower trajectory. This may seem like a bad analogy just like a right hand baseball hitter hitting a very hard foul line drive down the 3rd base side. perhaps I am coming across or perhaps mishitting. I kind of think is all due to over swinging. My friend I play with keeps telling me to let the club do the work and dont try to kill it. I am doing much better but when I hit a very long good ball. I get the tendency to swing harder on my next tee ball. I have made big improvement in playing with someone that knows how to play and can tell me what I do wrong and lets me know when I do something right. Thanks for the reply

The physics rule of golf: The direction the ball starts out will be determined by the path of the club. The curvature of the ball is determined by the clubface (open or closed) at impact.

So, if you're swing out to in, the ball will want to start out to your left (right for left handers). The ball will either draw, hook, fade, slice, or go straight based on how far open or closed the clubface is at impact. Open face -- ball curves right (right handers). The most commonly seen swing among high handicappers is an over the top, outside to in swing path with an open clubface at impact .... results are a ball that starts out going left and slices back to the right (again, right handed golfers).

If you cut across the ball, you will slice the ball, guaranteed.

I guess I am closing my clubface. I really try to concentrate on having a loose grip which I think too loose could cause this.

    • Day 33 (20 Feb 26) - played the Friday men’s group shootout.  Solid day of working from some tough shot results - made for a good number of up and downs for par (8 of the 9 pars were such). Cart mate and I discussed the visual aspect of the game - and how much it plays into the individual’s mindset during the round.  Love when the discussion is focused on learning and taking positives away and not just how bad the miss may be.
    • Day 507 - 2026-02-20 Got some backswing work in on GEARS Hybrid.
    • Still kinda working on the backswing stuff. I can turn < 45°, but I tend to tilt toward the target a little. I can tilt away from the target, but I tend to turn a bit more. Case in point. I can do it, though: This I can do all day (it's more lateral than I want, but it's very linear): Here's what 38° of turn looks like. Almost freaking nothing.
    • Good progress. I am finally feeling like I am settling my weight into my right foot earlier in the backswing. Right hip sinks back, right leg feels staying flexed. Feeling very stable and firm in the right leg. I feel like I could do a good squat with that right leg. Very balanced.
    • oops, forgot Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  And two more of the original Open rota, Prestwick and Musselburgh (with hickory shafted rentals).  And Muirfield.  And maybe a few more, I'll check my list when I get home.
