Finally my 14 year old son (his birthday today) went with me to the driving range to hit some balls, he has not played since December 07, we shared a large bucket of balls and he went through the irons, hybrid and driver. Its amazing he has not lost his golf swing, we spent another 30 minutes on the putting green testing 5 different putters to see what felt best for him and he putted about 150 balls. We finished it off with a putting contest and he won, or did I let him win?

It was great, I wanted to share that with everyone, because I want him to try out for the golf team, he made it on the basketball team and had his first game last Saturday.

He's 5'6" and kids he played against were as tall as 6'4", so his chances of playing JV next year are 30 - 45% in my opinion where as golf he will be able to play all 4 years.

Great to get the kids involved-I took my five yr old daughter to the range Friday afternoon and she had a blast. Took her back on Saturday as she said she wanted to go and have some more fun! Be great if she sticks with it as I have a wife that can't stand golf so she's my hope for golfing with family.

Thats really great! I would just encourage you to not put any pressure on him. My folks put a ton on me and I quit playing for 6 years! That is really fun though. Good luck with the club hunt for him..

I started playing at age 14 with my Dad, who is a PGA teaching professional. My parents were divorced when I was young, so that was the first chance we really had together. We spent a lot of time on the golf course for about 4 summers in a row and it was the best time we ever had together. Dad never treated me like I was his student. He gave me the basics and tips, but after that we just played and I got better very quickly just from being on course together (I don't think I ever really had a 'lesson' from him - it was always on course). Enjoy the time together and make sure he always has fun. I'm 38 and haven't had much of a relationship with Dad for 20 years now, but I still remember those days on golf course as some of the best ever and I still love to see a father and son (or daughter) on the golf course together.

My kids are both thirty-somethings.
Could never get them anywhere near the game.
A shame, really.
I'd enjoy playing with them.
For what it's worth, my dad didn't play, either.
The only sport he liked was boxing, so I even gave that a go as a kid. Did well locally, less good when I stepped up.
I started playing golf with my uncles on my mother's side when I was thirteen.

My 14 year old son, Ryan said he joining his High School golf team! :) I found out from his friends mom and when I asked my son he said that he went to the golf meeting last Tuesday and had the paper work to join the team this Spring after Basketball.

We might go out and play 9 holes with a friend this Sunday. :)

I am on cloud nine or ten.

I'm happy for you. My son is 11 and we've played since he was 3. Right now we play match, I double my score to the green (on in 2 = 4, on in 3 = 6) and putts count normal. He's starting to close in on me and the best I've done on our last 3 outtings is all square, but it is a blast. I always try not to correct him on bad shots, just be positive (well, that's straight or solid contact) and I'll toss him some advice if he hits 3 or 4 bad shots in a row (you're leaving the face open, think about your wrist position at impact). If he's just having one of those day, I'll give him his space. I'll always point out if one of us wins the hole and it clearly appeared there was no chance earlier, I want him to have confidence in the hunt, it's never over till it's over (as Yogie said). The only other thing I'll always do is shake hands after the match and tell him I had a good time and he played well (unless that would clearly be a lie, then I'll tell him he just had one of those days and remind him of what a friend of mine says "some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug). I too am amazed how he can not touch a club for 3 or 4 months then stripe it down the fairway off the first tee , kids, go figure..... jmoc

Funny story about my first round with my dad. I think I was probably 10 or 11 and he let me drive the cart and hit some shots from the fairway. One hole he told me to drive close to the ball and he was going to lean out and pick it up.

I did as instructed and as I neared the ball he started yelling, "slow down, slow down!" I depressed the brake pedal a little harder than I anticipated and my old man went tumbling forward out of the cart catching his tenders on the way out.

:(

I remember him yelling for me to get the hell out of the driver seat and help him up, I, of course was in stitches and needless to say, I wasn't allowed to drive the cart after that..

Thanks for the feedback and experience with your kids. I am not going to give advise or correct his swing unless he asks. I will only enjoy the time being on the course with my son and his friend. I am lucky he decided to try out for the team.

My 14 year old son, Ryan and his two friend and one of the dads and I went to the driving range today. I wanted to play 9 holes but decided to go to the driving range because of possibility of rain and one of his friends is not ready to play and needs more work on his golf swing.

My son, Ryan was hitting my other driver, R7 425 and was hitting it solid and can't weight to see how far he can hit it on the coures.

Ryan and his friend Abe hit their irons well and are both ready to play 9 holes to sharpen their whole golf game before the golf try out in February.

I am excited and Ryan enjoyed going out to the driving range with his friends.

bought my son, Ryan golf shoes, Etonic Dri-Tech Men's Gore-tex waterproof size 8 for $26 including shipping retail before for over $100. These shoes are better than what I am wearing, what a deal!

Next is a set of irons, got to get him to the golf store and try out different clubs. considering Mizuno mx 25 irons and not sure about the shafts yet. :)
He currently using my sister-in-laws Callaway Lady Gem with graphite shaft irons but he thinks they are too bulky, like father like son, I agree.

Hope to play at least 9 holes with him next Sunday with his friend, Abe.

Mizuno irons are a great iron to start out with for a junior. I am on my high school team and am the number one play, it is awsome to see other kids getting into the game of golf and to be able to help them learn the game and become better.

I am hoping to get him and his friend out on the courses this Xmas eve for 18 holes, wish me luck.

I got in to golf at 8 [now 23], with the help of my dad. We played a whole bunch and I ended up playing 1 year of high school golf [sophomore year]. I then proceeded to quit golf and just picked it up again about 3 weeks ago [about a 7 year layoff]. I had zero pressure from the parents/dad to keep going and playing. they let me do what I wanted regarding keep playing/quitting. I'm the type that could have used a little bit of pressure/encouragement to keep playing. I think I would have kept playing/improving and really enjoyed it. The moral of this story: every person is different, but some times a little encouragement/pressure can be a good route. If he's good and good enough to do well in tournaments/make the squad [jv or varsity]/go to college with it [eventually] then tell him that. "put pressure" on him that way. It can go a long way if he's intrisically motivated.
