Frost!

Just worked a 60+ hour week, looking forward to a couple of weekend games of golf, relax, get some fresh air, experiment with the new clubs - and unfortunately the weather has got the better of us Irish golfers...

Possibly the nicest day of the year - clear blue skies, sunshine, and tonnes of FROST!

I guess the 12 months of golf requires a better climate...

How do you guys in the snow covered places cope!? i'm going mad!

First off topic question what part of PA do you live in, and ya I'm so with you, I haven't been able to golf since late October.

We had snow 3 days this last week. Then Friday and today the temps got up into the 50's. The course opened up this morning, but I had other obligations so I called for a reservation for tomorrow. I'm teeing off at 8:57 AM. Should hit 60 here tomorrow, and tonight's low is only supposed to be about 40. It is SO nice to live in Colorado.

I will say thats one of the few advantages for a local golfer in Las Vegas, is I can play year round. You do sorta of have to take September off because all the courses overseed.

I actually read somewhere that frost does not damage courses as much as many of us think it does. It is just a common misconception.
I could be wrong here though.

Frost delays are horrible. I just call a local muni and ask when it will be over. I go about 30 minutes before it ends, hit balls, putt, and then go out.

Because of the snow we just got, this will be the first weekend I have not played golf since last February. As for frost, most of the time I just get the earliest tee time available and that way we are among the first to tee off after the delay. Before the snow, the longest delay we had was 2 weeks ago, which was about 1.5 hours.

When I can't play golf I don't do much. I play racquetball during the winter and go to Golf Galaxy to 'window shop' and hit balls on simulator. If it looks like good weather is going to happen during the week sometime I'll just request a vacation day and play. Golf is far more important than work.

I agree. There are course I play here year long. They're open as long as there is no snow, no matter the temps. And they manage to be one of the best conditioned courses all year.

Frost does more damage when the grass is still green. If you walk on green growing grass on a frosty morning (especially on a golf green or tight fairway), by mid morning your footprints will be a trail of death across the grass, because the grass stalks break right at the top of the root. Once the grass has gone dormant, the damage is lessened (but not totally eliminated) because the living part of the plant has withdrawn below ground. To be on the safe side, most courses have a policy of no play while frost is on the greens, regardless of the season. I can tell you that the courses in the best condition will always have a rigid frost policy. It's just a small part of a good maintenance program.

the frost hasn't gone - another armchair afternoon watching the golf is on the cards.

i'm playing a winter league, best 5/9 scores, winner gets 200 Euro, about 250 dollars. 2 weeks have been cancelled because of frost. 2 more weeks left, a couple of good scores to my handicap and i'll be in the running. More frost and I will get nothing!

I live in Upstate NY and luckily we have a sports soccer dome that is open Monday-Friday for hitting golf balls. It's not as good as a real range but it's warm and it's way better than banging balls into a net. I also set up a putting and chipping area in my basement about 60 feet long where my son and I can get some practice in over the winter. It's not easy living in the north and being addicted to golf, you have to be creative!

Yeah I was wondering that too, I looked up a definition. And it said something about liquid moisture freezing, and leaving a white icy residue on outside surfaces.

I quit trying to understand there though, because I was going to have to look up definitions for "liquid", and "moisture" as well so I'll just let it go

Just FYI.... Lake Mead is liquid moisture,

but it isn't frost.
