I have heard in cold weather to use a lower compressed ball. I was wondering what temp should it be when to start playing a softer ball. I was playing a Callaway HX Hot but am switching to another ball probably a Pro V1.

Thanks

ProvV1 is going to be higher compression ball. Look at Bridgestone E6 or the low compression ball which I like is the less expensive Wilson Staff 50/50.

Warm up a sleeve of your normal balls under hot water for 5 minutes before your round. Keep them in your pocket instead of your bag. You won't notice much difference at all.

Precept MC lady ball is a low compression ball and I believe the Costco Titleist balls are also.

I saw a feature on golf channel the other night where they said that as long as you keep your balls indoors (room temperature) they should be all right and play relatively close to normal for up to 10 hours. Conversely if you keep them in the car/garage/shed it takes around 10 hours to get them thoroughly warmed up.

I have found the Wilson Zip is very good in the colder weather.

Wish that was true. Doesn't really work when your greens are frozen lakes and the course is ontop of a hill. All my golf balls usually freeze after the 3rd hole. I should try keeping them in my pocket, or even stuffing them into a thermos, that might work, but I like playing the same ball the whole game so it puts a damper on that.

I read something a while back about how golf balls react to cold weather. The article I was reading (I think it was Frank Thomas's QA from TheGolfChannel.com or franklygolf.com) said that golf balls seem to perform best at around 80*. From there take about 2 yards (with driver) off for each 10* drop in temperature.

With that said, I usually start thinking about the temperature and golf balls under about 50*. At that point I start playing lower compression golf balls and even keep the balls in my house until I head to course and always carry 3-4 balls in my pocket to keep them warm for the round.

The balls I usually play when temperture drops into 40's and lower are the Wilson Zip or Fifty. Of course if the balls are kept warm (taking them inside) and you carry them in your pocket or find another way to keep them warm during round, the compression becomes less of a concern, but you still wouldn't want to play some of the firmer balls (probably 85+ compression, like most 'tour' balls). If the golf balls are cold then the lower compression the better (since the cold is going to cause the 'effective' compression to be higher anyway).

    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.
