I have a pretty bad case of the hooks. I had a shot w/ my 5-iron today and it had a good 15-20 yd hook on it. I dont normally do this i usually hit a 2-3 yd draw or fade. So im looking for things that might help anything im pretty tired of these crazy hooks. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The answer depends (most of the time) on the type of hook. It is pretty hard to hit a high 20 yard hook (in no wind) with a five iron if the ball starts out right of the target and works back to the target, but it is pretty easy to hit a ball that starts at the target and is pull-hooked 20 yards left. The swing path for these two extremes are different. Are you pull-hooking or push hooking, or somewhere in between? The answer to this would be useful for suggestions. My own bad hooks are supposed to be shots I decide to draw, starting right of the target and coming back, but they sometimes turn into pull hooks and in my case that is when I slide a bit and don't keep the right elbow connected while keeping the body turning through the shot -- I call it a "lazy or tired legs" hook. The only fix I know for that one is to stay flexed on the inside right leg on the backswing and clearing my hips while staying behind the ball on the downswing, i.e., no lazy sliding of the lower body (the lazy lower body encourages an over the top flip release and that produces the pull hook nightmare.) Try to hit a hook with your right elbow leading your right hand into the hitting area... it is hard to pull one that way.

I guessing it basis swing mechanics try the following:

1) check your grip and grip pressure and make sure that the club is supported with the pad of your left hand near your pinky and lighten the grip of your right hand only using the middle and ring finger to lightly grip the club.
2) try taking the club back with a slower tempo ensuring a full backswing
3) make sure your rear shoulder is tilted lower than your front this will ensure your head stay behind the ball.
4) keep your left arm straight on the backswing and this will help shorten your backswing.
5) check your swing path so that it is not too much inside
6) make sure your iron face is perpendicular to the target and if necessary drop a club on the ground to check your alignment and ball position.
7) start your down swing not with your arms but with your hip with your arms following in the slot
8) check your hand position from your body at address and make sure it's not too close.
9) make sure you have some knee flex at your address position

try practicing with some chipping and pitching and see the direction of your pitches. I feel the pitching and chipping is similar to the full swing.

Got to try some of the tips advised here and the one about cutting the ball worked great. I hit it dead strait no movement at all on some shots. Thanks all

I concentrate upon my alignment. My easiest fix is to make sure that my club is released down the target line. That works 90% of the time. Another option is to make the grip weaker but it feels so awkward for me that I do not do it often.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
