Gah... Stupid winter break...

Recently, I've been hitting almost every single iron shot (woods are fine) thin. I've tried a ton of different things - the main one is making sure my lower body is not totally separated from my upper. This works about half the time - the other half of the time I catch it fat, or hit the mat. I won't be able to have a lesson until after new years, cause the local pro is on a vacation. I also can't get to a grass range, or any range, so I'm just going on feel here.

What should I be working on? Swinging in my garage is pretty much pointless right now. Every shot I do random things to see if it works, and I'm basically just screwing around, no real conscious thought of what I'm doing.
It's driving me nuts!

Thanks...

For me I focused on just transferring my weight sooner making it easier to hit down on the ball but you might not have the same problem I had

I guess that your back leg is straightening (I don't know if I wrote it well) during your back swing.

Gah... Stupid winter break...

Have you gotten new irons recently? If you have, then the x20 tours are probably lighter than your old ones, so your just getting used to them.

Yeah, I just got them recently. However, it's pretty much impossible they are lighted because my old set was a junior, graphite shafted, really short and light set.

I found if I do no weight shift, and don't think AT ALL about getting the hip turn to generate power, I hit great shots in terms of contact, but they go no where. Without the hip uncoiling, I get no power.

The instant I try to get a bit more speed, by thinking about the hip unwinding, I start screwing up again.

ANy more suggestions?

interestingly enough, i just made a thread about hip turn and I feel the same way about my irons. The extra length of the new irons might make them swing actually lighter than your old ones, just work on brushing the grass, and over time you'll get it. I felt the same way I first tried hitting blades, I thinned everything, but even though I don't play them, hopefully I will soon, but whenever I hit them I know how to.

Oh, there are probably only about 20 things you could be doing wrong. You said you are hitting the woods alright so my thought is your swing plane for the irons is too flat. Great for the driver not so good for the irons. Of course corrrecting that problem may involve several elements of your swing and whether you are a one or two planer.

Keep your weight on your left foot and never shift it to the back and it will help you get the proper divot. If your hitting behind the ball then thats your problem. Start forward, stay forward

Oh you can also try standing with your feet a bit closer together too. I used to have a little bit too wide of stance for my irons now that its just inside shoulder width at most it really hits down at the ball better

Hi. This is my first post. Cool forum. I think I would try turning your wrists over more at impact. This seems to make clean contact and I always take out a huge divot when I do it.

Don't know what causes you to hit shots fat or thin but with me the upper part of my body is not as still as it should be. My thought is to keep my head still. May not actually be my head moving but that is what it feels like to me. Other than that it is not completing my turn on the takeaway.

Exactly. Usually hitting fat is a result of not moving your hips or belt line in a circular motion (or around your spine). What happens is people (me included) usually sway my hips and it gets me in trouble.

Just like jambalaya said it could be many reasons - for example not a proper weight shift and ball position... try to hit the ball with putting feet together. This should help you to stay leveled and because not much weight shift in a swing like that should help with the better contact...; do not use full swing, just half (or a bit more later).

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
