It is suppose to be 68 and clear here tomorrow and I plan on going to the driving range and spending a lot of time practicing. The course I am going to has a great chipping area which is where i plan on spending most of my time. So I was just wondering if anyone has any drills, tips, or any practice advice on how to conduct a serious practice session.

Thanks

One thing I do when I go to range to practice is mentally play a round. In your mind pick a course you often play and know the holes well. Then 'play' that course on the range, estimating your distances of previous shot to choose your next club. If you hit a bad hook, the perhaps you even hit a knockdown shot for next shot. This is what I often do at range after warming up for a little while (kind of my same routine playing...) This is better for me than just standing there whacking balls at flags out there.

For short game practice I like to use a towel and mark spot on green inline with hole, then try to hit that spot with different clubs from different distances, getting it to release to hole. This helps with 2 things - it helps learn how far a certain club will roll out after hitting green from a certain distance and it helps with short game distance control.

Most important - make practice fun.

Be sure to allways drop the ball, or throw them around. Play from where they lie. Try to get up and down from every spot.

One thing I like to do when practicing is listen to some music. Various tipes of music, metal, rock, classic, pop. You see, music can change your mood, and on the course, your mood changes a lot from shot to shot or hole to hole. This helps you to stay focused at the task at hand.

Move around a lot. Don't spend x amount of time on the range followed by y amount of time working on short game. Rotate back and forth between different parts of your game to keep your mind fresh and interested.

Have fun!

When Im out on the practice range I like to
1. work on BALL STRIKING this is very important to having a good round
2. consistancy with the correct fundamentals and correct swing patterns, never just go to the range and "hit balls" always work on getting the right swing imbedded into your brain so when your on the course it all comes naturally

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
