  1. 1. Which headcover style do you prefer?

    • I like the current type (shorter)
      12
    • The longer type that protects the shafts
      37
    • Either is fine by me
      12
    • Don't use headcovers on my woods anyway

I stayed away from the game for a few years....return and find that many if not most of the headcovers coming with today's clubs are much shorter than the long "socked" style. This may be a retro stlye....I'm not sure.

They look cool and are fast to take off / put on.....but they don't offer much protection on your shafts. Bag chatter from irons & wedges is tough on the shafts.

What is your preference on the styling????

If you had asked me a week ago, I prob wouldn't have had much of an opinion. Last Sunday however, one of our group had his bag fall over on the range while warming up. When we got to the first tee, he took one practice swing with his driver and the shaft snapped at the neck. Had he had a head cover that protected the shaft from getting dinged by the irons when the bag fell over, that might not have happened.

Of course, the easy answer is don't drop your bag, but it can't hurt to have some additional protection for the shafts either.

As an aside, he's a 15 handicap and proceeded to go out and break 80 for the first time. Since I'm giving up 9 strokes to him, guess how he's gonna be paying for that new shaft?!

I prefer the longer, shaft protecting head covers, but you're right that most new clubs are coming with the shorter head covers that are easier to remove. When I play I leave the head cover for driver and putter in the car because I have to keep taking them off all day anyway and would be afraid of losing them or forgetting them (plus this keeps them dry in case of rain). I keep the covers on 3W and hybrids, though, since they don't get used as much (plus they are at height that keep banging against each other in bag). My bag has putter tube so it's kept away from other clubs and thus doesn't get banged up.

It is simply amazing to me how often that bags do fall off carts in the parking lot or near the starter area. So often people forget to strap 'em in and then hit the accelerator and keeerash. It's a sickening sound if ever there was one.

I have a buddy that does the same thing......leaves the headcovers off during the round. I have to admit, I've never understood that. The clubs don't need "protecting" when they're sitting at home in the garage, patiently waiting to get out on the course again. They need protecting when they're on the course, being carried on my shoulder or bouncing around in the back of a cart or having other clubs removed and replaced next to them. FWIW, the guy that had his driver shaft damaged by getting hit by an iron head has a tubed bag too. At least with his bag, while the tubes keep the shafts from contacting each other, the iron heads can still swing around and damage any unprotected shafts......as he found out with his new TaylorMade driver. Just my .02 which prob isn't even worth that!

I prefer the longer sock style. Ive had some problems with the shafts getting worn from the friction agaist the bag without them. Titliest has been good about that until came out with the headcovers for the 909 series. I have a hybrid and just after a couple of months the paint around where the shaft and bag meet is wearing out..I use a headcover from the older 585 model now just to protect that portion of the shaft.

I actually prefer the shorter ones, mainly because the easy of use. I have my clubs staggered in the bag so that the shafts are protected. The covers come right to the top of where the bag leaves off. I kinda like the look of the old school sock type covers. But every time I've used them with this bag, the bottoms just ride up anyway. I think my bag might be a little deeper than some. It's a cart bag, because I never walk. I would probably feel different if I was hoofing it with a bag built with just 6 or 8 club compartments to save weight.

thats one thing i like about my Ogio Grom bag. it has the rubber strap that you can use to strap the bag to the back of the cart so it wont fall off even if the cart strap comes loose. it also keeps the bag in place rather than swaying from side to side while the cart is moving like so many bags do

My woods have the long shaft protector type and my hybrids have small head cover only type, so I said either. I will say Cleveland's HiBore headcover is really well designed. It has a "EZ Grab" handle that makes pulling it off easier than most of the newer long headcovers. It seems like no big deal, but once you use it you love it.

Long ones.....my 5 year old cover finally got too ratty to keep around....replaced it with a club glove, or something like that.....long, and it zips up for easy removal....I'm happy, glad I got it...

Long covers. I can't stand to hear a bag full of clubs rattling around. I keep the headcovers on, especially during play. I also keep the Castle Bay headcovers on all my irons, too. I have a lot invested in my golf bag, and I want to keep everything in the best possible condition.

Short ones. IMO the Nike SQ driver covers are the best and most convenient headcovers the market (and I do not even own a Nike club). Many of you mention that the long head covers protect your shafts…..protect your shafts from what? Banging against the top of your bag? I wouldn't worry about that too much (unless minor cosmetic flaws bother you).

Function appearance on all my equipment.

From banging against my irons, which can and will put knicks all up and down the graphite shafts after enough time.

I also am all about function though.... those stealth covers I listed go on and off so easy it is rediculous... they don't slip like some "sock type" covers do and they are easy to pull on.

I think the traditionalist in me prefers the socked ones, especially the knitted ones with the pom-poms on the top. :)

I would agree though with the comment about the Nike Covers. I have a Nike SQ driver and the head cover is so easy to remove and put back on. How ever I have the wood as well and they use the sock covers. I guess they figured with the size of the driver head, it's easier with the current head cover than the sock style to remove.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
