In the market for both new clubs and a new tv. Don't really need either, but finally have enough saved up for ONE or the other. Getting both unfortunately isn't an option.

Just looking for some random opinions. If you had 1k to burn which would you get?

Well, think of it this way- How good is your tv you have now? Do you really need one? But, on the other hand are you one of those guys whose always watchng the games or playing Playstation, ect.
Or do you really need new irons!

Well if you get a new tv your gunna wanna play less golf!(maybe not) but if you get new irons your gunna wanna play more golf!

I almost never watch cable tv. The only cable I do watch is Steelers football when it's on... ESPN every now and then. Though since I took up golf, I've been watching more and more and more Golf Channel.

I watch a decent amount of tv/movies on dvd. Most of the time I watch stuff from my computer... either streaming or downloaded. Currently I have a 27in flat panel big huge CRT 4:3 tv. I also have a 22in widescreen monitor. I have cables hooking up my computer to my tv... and every now and then (usually when I have friends over) I'll hook it up and watch it on the real tv... but that's generally too much trouble.

Looking to buy a 37"-47" 1080p tv. I assume 60Hz would be fine since that's what my monitor is... but a small part of me wants to just wait til I can get a 120Hz for cheap. This TV will be hooked up to my computer as a third monitor.

I also refuse to go cheap brand-wise. I'm looking for a Toshiba Regza or Samsung preferably. Though I've been starting to see a few really surprisngly nice Vizio sets that are making me double think my plans. Probably not though. Cheapest I've seen are a couple for about $700 after tax/ship.

I do watch enough to make it worth it, but when it comes down to it, I only really watch things when the weather outside isn't nice. Much prefer to be out playing golf!

As for the clubs, I'm sold on Taylormade Tour Preferreds, just need to figure out the specs that are right for me before spending all the money. They'll run be about $1k.

The thing is I have about $1250 in golfsmith credit. I could probably sell easily for about $800-$1000 if I decided to buy the tv instead.

Buying both isn't really an option in any case... regardless of what I want :)

Check my post in the middle of the thread.

Had the tv about 3 years. It's an old Samsung 27" CRT with a flat front panel -- still freakin huge depth-wise like all older tv's. Picture quality is awesome with component cables. The issue is size (both screen size and tv bulk and convenience (since most my media is streaming from the computer) so in the end, I end up watching much more on my Viewsonic 22" widescreen monitor at my desk. Had the clubs roughly 5 months. Just bought them -- a relatively inexpensive complete set of Slazenger Wrath graphite shafts -- to take up golf. Turns out I really like golf, and would like some "real" equipment. I'm still pretty new in the golf arena, but I've been a tennis player all my life. There are many paths I took in the tennis equipment area because I didn't know much.... in golf I'm trying not to make the same mistake. (Just incase people aren't aware... tennis also has a pretty big gap of types of equipment ranging from super game improvement to super-players type things. I just figure to some extent, what I've learned from tennis will be analogous to golf.)

The TV might be state-of-the-art for about a year
There are leaps in golf club technology every four years or so.

TVs should last about 10 years.
Golf clubs about five.

I could not live without golf in some shape or form. With the internet, newspapers, and magazines, I could easily (and do) not watch TV.

26"...

???????... was it for the kitchen or bathroom. I have a 36" tube TV and I have been casually looking... just picked up a home theatre and upconvert DVD player for Christmas, and have an Xbox 360... so I'm thinking I need an HD TV ASAP... probably go for a 46" as anything smaller seems like a lateral move.... probably going to wait a little bit though... already found some I like for between $1,000-$1,700, depending on 60 or 120 mhz. Also... I have replace pretty much my entire bag in the last couple years... probably replace my clone driver and 3-wood soon, but not in any real hurry as both still work great.

Don't know how I missed the other post...... I vote TV......no brainer. The difference you'll get out of a newer HD TV will be night and day from your old 27" set......and it's something you'll use and appreciate every day. You're new enough to golf that new equipment won't make a huge difference to you yet. Get the TV and start tucking $20 a week into a jar and get the new clubs in a year when you'll have a better idea of what best suits your game. BTW.....you won't believe what the Masters looks like in 1080 HD!

Get some '08 clubs for half price and get a TV from last year too. You might be able to get both, particularly the latter, with 0% interest.

My wife and I did the 0% interest thing with one of our TVs and spread the cost out over two years. Pocketed the interest whilst the $2800 went into the stock market and with some wise choices investing wise essentially paid for the TV.

Damn... you made some very valid points. Honestly your post just made my decision harder. Been eyeing an older set of r7 TPs wondering if golfsmith would price match... I had given up on em after hitting and really liking the Tour preferreds... but now I'm going in circles.

As for the tv, I'm very against buying things I can't pay in full... but assuming I stashed the money away earning some interest.... that's a great idea. Ahh... decisions....

I guess its a seasonal issue - if you're contemplating this in the middle of winter, then the TV wins. If you continue contemplating this for another 2 months, then you know where your heart is. .

Depends on which one you do more. If you want to get a used set at golf galaxy for 150-250$ and then get a smaller TV. Then save up for a new set of the tour preffereds. By then(knowing tm)there will be 3-4 new sets out so the TPs will be cheaper. Personally though I would go for the irons
