I am going to get a set as a present in February(thinking i will wait till it gets warmer though so i can get fitted). I am thinking along the lines of the Titleist ZB or maybe the AP2. Not sure if I want as big of an iron as the AP2 though. Basically I am looking at any player's iron that comes to mind. Also cost is not an issue although i dont want a 1600$ set of Miuras. Any suggestions are welcome. I am a fairly good ballstriker with a swing of 90ish w/ the driver but have gotten a lot stronger in the past few months since i have played so it may be 95ish now not really sure. Thanks in advance.

I've read a lot of good things about Mizuno Mp 33s and Mp 32s. I'm also in the process of getting new irons and I'm going for the Mp 33s.

Posted
Give Mizunos a try. Everyone on this forum seems to love them. I would say the MP-57s or a combination of them and a blade if you want. I have hit the MP-32s and they were like butter.
I love my PING i10s. They may be a bit too large for your taste, but for me they are wonderful. Give the S57s (I think that's what they are called) a try. They are more of a player's club than the i10s, but should offer a similar feel.
The AP2s were almost as good as the i10s, but not as good for me. Some guy on the PGA Tour whose name I cannot remember plays the AP2s. If they offer enough control for him, they should offer enough control for you. I have not hit the ZBs, but have hit the 695? MBs. I'm not sure if that's the model, but it was a true blade. It was not as buttery as the Mizuno. Blades do not offer the forgiveness I need anyway.
There are tons of good used or older models that can be found. You could always go that way and get the clubs fit after the fact. Ben Hogan went out of business I think, so you could find forged Apex's for under $400 and put DGs or KB Tours or PX's in them.

If you are looking for a combo set like the ZBs, you could try the Bridgestone J36. They look really nice. I haven't hit them, so no comment there.
You could also try an i10-S57 combo. There are a ton of Mizuno combos as well.

I don't think that you should limit yourself clubs that look good to you. I read that PGA pros don't care how a club looks, as long as it works. If a club feels good and has good results for you, choose it. Looks can always be overlooked (no pun intended...I couldn't think of a better word.)

Any idea on any other blended sets? Anyone?

I hate (and hardly ever do) pimping the equipment I play...however the J36 Bridgestone Combo set was bar-none the best fit for me.

3-5 Pocket Cavity
7-8 Cavity Back
9-PW Blade

Give them a try (if you can find a dealer that carries them).

I finally got to take my new AP2's out on the course today for the first time. I'm very impressed. Good distance, good ball control... I even hit a couple of nice draws, something that I'm not at all good at. Even on semi frozen greens I spun an 8I back 5 feet using a Bridgestone B330 ball. I'm going to love these irons.

I hit the J36s at golfsmith the otherday, they have a smaller very attractive head, and good feel, but I didn't really see what the shot was like with them.

the other players type iron I want to hit but haven't are the Cobra pro Cb/mbs. Our pro has the cbs, and they are beautiful clubs, I really want to hit some and if I like that might be my next set. I believe that both Camillo and Geoff Ogilvy play them, not that that really matters.

Ditto that on the Cobra Pro MB's. They are beautiful clubs and I cannot wait to give them a try.

For titliest i would go with the 735cm's. Though they are not in production anymore. I have a set of those as backups. Very solid clubs and more than a couple of PGA teaching pros i know still use them for play in their state pga tourneys.

Im pretty sure he could go with the ZB's as well, but i read in the post he was concerned about price.

you sound like me, all the TM clubs just dont appeal to me at all. ive played with both the ZM's and the ZB's and they are both money. im sure you'd be happy with the ZB's. ive also hit the Mizuno MP67's (not the 57's) and was

VERY surprised at the amazing feel those have. if you havent hit those, you really owe it to yourself to do so. i never really got into Mizuno irons before but when i took those out for a round recently (i can demo just about any set you can think of thru my club), ive been thinking i need to get a set of those ever since. ive been using the Precept Tour Premium Forged CB's for a few years now because I havent found anything else that feels as nice as they do until I hit the Mizunos. pure butter...the MP67's would also be a great iron to build a combo set with, say MP57/MP67 Combo or something similar.

the titleist ap2's are not a big iron at all. Sure they may look it from pictures on the internet, but at adress they look exactly like a blade, except the top line is just a tiny bit thicker...and i do mean tiny.

No actually i was saying that I am not concerned with price but i dont want anything ridicously expensive (exc. miura, scratch etc..)

I actually have the 67s right now but im looking at something just a tiny bit more forgiving until i get a bit better(they are pure butter though). I really wish that I could buy an entire set like the 6-7 irons in the zbs. They look great. If anyone knows if there is a way to get this or something similair please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I was faced with a similar decision this fall, hit a birthday milestone and got new golf clubs. I'm a forged club guy, so I tried all of the forged clubs on the market and it came down to the Titleist AP2, ZB, Mizuno MP 60 and MP 67. I ended up going with the MP 60. I wish I had some very special insight as to why them but I don't, basically I couldn't decide and found a set of MP 60's at rock bottom price and bought them! I really do like them and have absolutely no regrets, I played Mizuno Pro's before buying this set.
