Hey guys, im looking for a hyrid right now because i need something to bridge the gap between my 3 iron(once i get my new set) and my 3 wood. Im looking at 2 different hybrids right now. The titleist 909h and the tour edge XCGV. I want a hybrid with either a 17,18 or 19* loft. I will pick loft another time, but i wanted to know how many of you have hit either of these specifically the tour edge, and what you thought of them.
Thanks for your help!

I have just sold my Cleveland hybrid and replaced it with a Titleist 585H (I wanted 17* to bridge the 3 wood - 3 iron gap.) I have not hit it yet but at address it looks very nice, no offset, compact head etc. The XCGV is also very nice too, I tried it at a demo day. It comes off the face pretty hot and it is a good looking club. I would go with the Titleist 909h if I had to choose (although i'm sure you will be happy with either of them)

Would you go with the 909h because it performs better or the price of the tour edge was too high

I have hit both and am actually an xcg (18*) and an xcg-v (16*, 21*) owner. The 909H are slightly open and it was noticable in the ball flight in the lower lofts so I disqualified it right out of the gate. The exotics are squared. The xcg's truly produce with an effortless swing. I actually replaced my dvs shaft in my xcg with a diamana because I wanted more play in the tip. I have the stock Graphite design in my xcg-v's and they play well with them but I will probably put a diamana in the 16*.

They both felt pretty good but obviously I felt the exotics felt a little better and to me they had a hotter face as well.

Go hit both... if you are comfortable playing a slight fade... give the 909 a chance.

Bit of both really. If they were identically priced I would go with the 909h.

I tried both and I went with 909H for a few reasons.

First, I personally needed a slightly open faced hybrid.

Second, they performed equally for me with slight edge in terms of sound and distance to TE but distance was not what I was looking for. 909H had edge over in accuracy and trajectory department.

Third, Voodoo for Titleist was surprisingly a good performer with heavier weight with good amount of torque for 909H. I prefer the heavier shafts and didn't have to spend extra on reshafting.

Fourth, 909H is cheaper.

Fifth, Titleist has better resale value if I decide to sell here where I am staying. TE would not sell unless I advertise at dirt cheap price.

Sixth, 17* fits my loft gaps better.

Lastly, which is not an important matter, but 909H looked right in my bag with the rest being Titty stuff.

However, I would ask you to try both before buying. Have fun!

I'm prejudiced -- I love everything I've ever got from Tour Edge, and currently hit a Tour Edge driver, 3-wood, 4-wood and 2-hybrid. I'm playing with the 16* XCG and absolutely love that thing -- goes 210-230 from the fairway with an easy swing.

That said, I have a few hybrids that I rotate in and out of my bag. I also really like the Nickent 4DX-ironwood at lot, as well as the Nike Slingshot, and just got a Hogan 2H last week that I have yet to take out, but that swings sweet and looks sweet as can be. Haven't tried the Titleist, so can't comment on the comparison.

If i were to go with the 909h, should i get a 17* or 19*. Please keep in mind that my 3 wood is 15.5*, im also afraid that my distance gap will be too little between the 3 wood and hybrid if i go 17*.

I carry a 14.5 3 wood, and the 585H in 17, my distance gaps are pretty good i think.. 3 iron goes about 210, the hybrid about 230, and the 3 wood 250 ish. So my distances work pretty well.. so they may for you as well, assuming your yardages are close to mine, or you are pretty consistent.

I dont see why you dont take a look at the 585.. its a great club thats gonna be pretty cheap with the 909's coming out..

Another club you may like is the Adams idea Pro's.. they are real nice.. thats the ONLY club i would trade my 585 for.

Just because its new doesnt make it better.

I have hit the 585 before, and i didn't like it. I thought the ball didnt really jump off the face, and it had a dull feeling. I too like the pro golds, and am looking at them as well. The reason why im asking about the 909h and the xcgv is because the shops around me arn't currently carrying these clubs. I dont know why, because they have the 909 fw and drivers but dont have the hybrid. Not sure about the TE hybrid though. I want your opinions because i havn't gotten to hit either yet, thanks.

If your 3 wood is 15.5* then you can go with 19* with 909H. Some people use the 19* to replace both 5 wood and 3 iron but I personally would use 19* as a 5 wood/2 iron replacement and still keep my 3 iron. But that is just me. I used to own 585H and in this case I personally think that newer is better... I didn't like the dead/dull feel of 585h at all. Therefore, I was skeptical about 909H until I tried it out for myself.

Three words for you : DEMO DEMO DEMO !

It's really difficult to give you a definite answer on here for a question like this . A lot depends on how you currently shape the ball , whether you like to hit irons or woods , and whether you are most content with steel or graphite shafts .

For me , while I like hitting woods , I prefer to hit irons for accuracy and angle of approach into a green . I also find it easier to get fitted into a steel shaft rather than graphite . You have to determine what works for you BEFORE you pull the trigger on a purchase , not after ... -- K.

The 585h is very workable, IMO... I got a 17* 909h as a Christmas gift... I like it but haven't had enough time on the range to make it a gamer... The Hogan hybrids are solid, I used to hit them until Titleist came out with the 585h... I have not hit the Tour Edge hybrid but their fairway woods are strong... Also the Adams Idea Pro hybrids are very nice... I agree, demo demo demo... I think any of the top equipment companies make solid hybrids, just find one that looks good to you and make sure you get the right shaft

That's a hard question. I dumped my 3-iron, and my 4-wood and 2-hybrid are both 16*, so I have an 8* gap between them and my 4-iron, which (counterintuitively) has not been a problem for me, since I'm rarely going for the green with either of them, and my longest approach shot is typically 180 or so -- which is a 4-iron for me. For a while I played around with a 3-hybrid, just to fill the gap, but I generally use my 4W and 2H interchangeably, and hit one from the fairway and the other from every other lie.

I'm not sure if filling the gap by the numbers really gets you anywhere as a practical matter, anyway, since on a good day I can hit my 2H as far as my 3W, even though there's a 3* loft difference between them.

I carry a 19 909h and it works well for me. I also carry a 21 titliest 585h and I am also very happy with that club. If you tend to hook most hybrids the 909 might be for you. Also, the Cobra Baffler pro's are very good hybrids, but with their deep faces, are not as easy to hit at the lower lofts.

    • Folks, I am having some difficulty understanding how this is fair and equitable;   The USGA says that handicaps in a fourball match play are based off of the low handicap in the group.   For example; players A and B are partners, C and D are partners, Handicaps are A = 18, B = 23, C&D are both 19. therefore B gets 5 strokes and C&D both get 1 stroke. Player B gets 5 strokes even though C&D, his opponents, are only 4 strokes less in handicap. Somehow, to me, this doesn't seem fair and equitable.    Anyone have clarifying thoughts?   Hopefully I got the terminology correct.
    • Yeah, I drove out a few times just to check out  the landing area and still was surprised at where the ball ended up with what I thought were perfectly placed drives.
