Ok, right now I'm playing random golf balls, mostly decent ones like titelist pro vs or titelist nxt.

I'm thinking of switching my practice balls to something cheaper, probably around 15-20 dollars for a dozen.

For tournament balls, I was thinking about either pro v1's or Bridgestone e5+... is bridgestone considered a tournament ball?

You should play one ball and stick with it. The performance of a premium ball like the Pro V is different from that of an inexpensive ball. The distance off the tee will be different and the amount of spin on the greens will be different.
I personally dont consider the Bridgestone E5+ to be a, "tournament" ball. Thats more of an inexpensive ball for an amateur.
In the Bridgestone line, I would consider the B330 to be a tournament or premium ball.

I agree with this 100%. If you are going to be playing in competitions you don't need to be scratching your head on the 3rd hole wondering why the 8-iron was too long or why the ball bounced over the green instead of stopping.

I agree with this also. You can find some used ones cheap. There might be one or two bad ones in the bunch, but most should be fine. Also, a few of the golf stores in my area will sell X-outs or 'practice' balls that are cheaper than the regulars. They will probably be more than $15-20, but cheaper than new balls.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

most of the courses ive been to have a bucket of "gently" used balls for around a buck a pop... and there is usually a bunch of titleists... you can also go online and get really cheap used balls that are actually rated on how "new" or beat up they are... those are pretty cheap too

To need a "practice ball" is exactly the type of thinking that holds you back in this game or any other endeavor for that matter. You only live once, go for it. Hit your best ball and your best shot over that water. See and feel the ball land on the green with courage before you hit it and eventually it will.

The best advice is always to play one type ball and stick with it. To play random balls around and on the green is a road to "no feel."

You will never develop a consistent short game (pitching, chipping and putting) unless you use balls with the same playing characteristics all the time. You may also struggle with your iron distances and trajectories if you change back and forth using balls with very different spin characteristics.

The Bridgestone ball that compares to the ProV1 is the B330, not the E5+. The E5+ is a mid range ball, not a premium ball, and you will not get the same performance from it.

If $ is a concern, Wilson Px3. Awesome overall ball. (I actually prefer this over a Pro-V for a couple reasons) Gets overlooked a lot. Last time I checked 15 to 29 bucks. I think Walmart is actually carrying this ball for something like 18.
Def. agree with other posts about sticking to one ball though.

I've been using Pro V1 PRACTICE balls: $25 a dozen at Edwin Watts and I've been very pleased with them. It's essentially the range ball for tournaments, they may have cosmetic blems but they are on the list of comforming balls and can be used for tournament play if you choose to.

Don't walk but

RUN right now to a store and buy a dozen Noodle Long & Soft (not the Maxfli Noodle although they do come in red / white / blue boxes) right now. You can pick 'em up for $15 dozens all day long. I've found them to perferm exactly as the E5+ balls and have switched over months ago. I'm not the type to make promises....but I promise that you'll like these gems. How's that for an endorsement. I also agree that you are better served by playing the same ball on practice rounds as in tournies. Game is all about feel....hard to dial in when you introduce equipment variables. Try 'em and let me know what you think.

i use prov1's during tournament rounds or matches. during practices i will use old prov1's that are from previous rounds, some NXT's and the occassionaly nike. during the summer i like to use Pinnacle Gold's alot during practice rounds because they have a nice feel and are cheap if i lose one or give em to a friend to borrow(slice into the woods).

Just buy used balls of varying quality at lostgolfballs.com. I think you can get tournament/mint quality ones for 20-25 a dozen and practice balls for as cheap as 9-12 depending on sales etc.

Keep it simple, use the same practice and tournament ball. Keep it consistent, will get to know the ball and how it performs all over the course

Best way to learn the golf ball

I play a budget ball, the TF D2 Feel and it is $20 for 15 balls and always use the same ball no matter what

Feels the same as the Pro V1 to me

+1 You can pick up boxes of used or reconditioned Pro V1s on ebay cheap. The last set I bought was 65 balls for about $35 after shipping. They perform almost as well as brand new. So there isn't a lot of difference between practice balls and the new ones I use for competitive play.

The other option is to look for logo "over-runs". You can buy brand new Pro Vs for cheap if you don't care about the random logos!
