Overlap vs Interlock vs Baseball Grips

For me, one of the problems with the baseball grip is the tendency to scoop the ball, because the pushing hand is lower down on the grip. I have tried and rejected the baseball grip for use in long-driving.

Me, I'm strictly an interlock kinda guy. Always have been. Baseball feels far too "wristy" to me. God when you've got a bat in your hands, bad when it's a club.

I've stuck with an interlocking grip after a short foray into the baseball grip. The baseball is too wristy, as Erik described. The interlocking just feels solid, maybe not as solid as the overlapping, but good. Jack Nicklaus recommended the interlocking for small hands in his book "Golf My Way."

I use the interlocking grip too but occassionally my skin starts ripping up on the inside of my right pinky. I'm pretty sure it's because of my death grip and I've been trying to fix it but I can't loosen up. My shoulders and hands often get very tense but I cant help it. Any advice?

Do you feel like the club will slip if you don't squeeze it tight? If so, try wearing a glove on both hands so that you won't need to grip it so tight.

oh yea i forgot to mention, i wear my gloves out very quickly... not a pretty sight
my best guess is my grips... i use the stock corded grips that came with my titleist 704.CB's and i don't find them comfortable at all. I was thinking about getting my clubs fitted and by fitted i mean my lie angle flattened a little and my clubs regripped.
but first, i'll try to loosen up and not try to smash the ball every time
i think i have subconscious urge to crush the ball that makes me to grip it hard and swing at 110% every time...
oh and i'll try using two gloves thing =P

I've heard from a few people about a grip called 'the lock' or similar, but none are really sure how it looks or works. Just wondering if anyone has some images of this and some advantages/disadvantages?

Three main types of grips:

• Interlock
• Overlap
• Baseball

That should help you find some things online about the differences, but here's a quick summary: Overlap - put left hand on top of club. Pinkie of right overlaps left hand between middle and pointer finger of left hand. Jim Furyk uses a double overlap with two fingers (pinkie, ring finger) overlapping. Interlock - put left hand on club, but instead of resting the pinkie on top, also rest pointer finger of left hand between right hand pinkie and ring fingers. Baseball - grip it like a baseball bat, all 10 fingers on the grip.

I use a baseball grip simply because I do and have played baseball for 20 years of my life.

Is there anything wrong with it? How many of you guys use it? I seem to control the clubhead better with it, but can't necessarily take quite as long of a backswing. I'd stick to the overlap, but I get blisters on my right hand. I know that not very many pros at all use a 10 finger...but I'm not a pro and I'm happy to shoot bogey golf. Let me know the pros and cons and any other input!

I would never recommend a 10 finger grip.

You want your hands to act as a unit. The overlap and interlock grips both mesh your 2 hands together to promote this. A 10 finger grips brings unwanted variables into your swing. You don't want to start getting dominant with your low hand. You want the swing to be dictacted by your high hand(left hand for righties).

If you are just starting out, the FIRST thing you work on is your grip. 2nd is your stance and ball placement.

Study the vardon grip, it's the best in the game. It promotes your hands to be in a neutral position at impact, thus returning you to square on impact. You don't want your hands to be neutral at address, you want them to be semi-strong. You want your grip to be neutral at impact.

But I reiterate, the grip is where it ALL starts. I see a lot of swing flaws develop purely b/c the individuals have bad grips. Whenever anyone hits me up for golf tips, the first thing I look at is their hands. If your hands aren't right, then everything thereafter will be wrong as well. 2 mistakes sometimes make a right with a golf swing, but you will be less consistent, less efficient, and most likely less powerful in doing so.

I actually play the interlock grip, there are a few pros that use it. As per if you should use the 10 finger, not unless you don't want to improve ^^. The 10 finger, or baseball grip, causes alot of people to flip the hands through impact leading to very bad shots.

But if it works for you, and you can consistently hit the ball go for it, traditional is not for everyone.

Sorry, pardon my ignorance but what is a Vardon grip?

vardon is the traditional name for the overlap grip, where your right pinky rests inbetween your left index and middle finger (for righties) and the opposite for lefties.

Interlocking, Overlapping, or 10 finger?

Ive used to use the 10 finger grip for a long time when i started playing golf, but recently i switched to the interlocking. I hear the overlapping is supposed to be a preferred grip by a lot of people but i was never comfortable with it, so i went with interlocking.

I use the interlocking grip. The 10 finger just felt way too weird. I have never tried the overlapping grip; I think I might try it the next time I go to the range.
