i have noticed that forged clubheads seem to be likely to have dings after continuous use.
i wonder, are these clubs so easy to deteriorate?

Deteriorate? as in what? like dissolve? waste away?

If so the answer is no. They simply scratch and ding easier.

Its not pretty, but dings are bound to happen. Nothing worse than seeing a pretty new set start to get dinged up. Just a way of life for an active golfer with forged irons. You could always buy iron covers...

no, lol, they wont deteriorate. they are just a softer metal which dings more easily.

yes but it's part of the game. you can take a unplayable when you are on hardpan with rocks that will scratch your clubs and use lightweight head covers also. I bought my forged irons used so it doesn't matter too me, however if they were brand new and shiny chrome I would have to think twice before hitting near rocks.

As the chrome wears they will rust if you don't take care of them. If you don't wipe them clean or get all the dirt and grass out of the grooves moisture will accelerate the corrosion.

Yeah, it's better to let a "nice set of forged irons" get the sh*t beat out of 'em so when you try to sell them nobody wants the things. That makes alot of sense.

Can't agree with not wanting to protect your irons. There's nothing wrong with iron covers except that they trap moisture and will cause your irons to prematurely rust. It happened to my first set of forged irons (Mizuno T-Zoid Pros). Fortunately Miz replaced all the heads for me. Now I use the Clip-Lok bag instead. It keeps the clubs from banging around and still shows off the set.

Sorry, not on a set of forged irons. Take a look at a set that's seen a lot of play over the years. The heads get so covered with dings they can look downright ugly. It all depends how well cared for the clubs are. Cast clubs are no comparison because they don't ding as easy. In my opinion the only people who can legitimately comment on this issue are people who have owned and played forged irons or have personal experience with them. That may very well be half the people on this forum.

Just my opinion but it really comes down to how you care for them and how you play (walk vs ride vs pull cart). Pull carts don't jostle the clubs as much from my experience.

Last I heard Buick was driven by the No.1 player in the world. I do wear socks with sandals sometimes to keep my feet from fryin and banged up forged heads look like sh*t AND your nuts if you think they slow down play!Ya want to look and admire them, take off the covers when you get home set 'em in your living room by the TV and stare. Also banged up sh*tty lookin irons = less resale value and you can take THAT to the bank.

I have been noticing the dings adding up on my irons. I agree with the posters who support iron covers. I had a Ping Eye 2 4 wood that was neglected. It would look great today if it had been covered. Yes, that was a wooden wood, but forged irons accumulate the same damage when left uncovered. It is socially acceptable to cover wooden woods as it is to cover metal ones. What is the difference between metal woods and forged irons. If anything, the woods because they reach above potential damage in the bag, need covers less, now that they are no longer wooden. Titanium drivers are no more ding prone than forged irons. Head covers, I guess, were originally created to stop damage on wooden drivers and fairway woods. The look of a classic bag, to me, includes uncovered blade irons, you want to see it, but I don't think the negative aspects of covers for forged irons needs to overwhelm my opinion of them. Yet some are nicer than others.

Hey, I never said anything about having to buy them. Just that they are an option if one were so inclined to need such a product.

dings / scratches = character

I'm with this school of thought.

Irons look great shiny and new and all, but they can't stay that way, so why be overly careful.

I personally don't think its being overly careful. They are going to get scratched and dinged through the normal course of play. And while the dings give the irons some character over the first few years, in 5-6 years they'll look like some kid used them to hit rocks in a quarry if not given some reasonable care.

I've used them in the past but don't now. It was too much of a hassle for me. The clip-lok bag solved my issues.

Wanna use headcovers or not is the own person's prerogative.

Personally, all my clubs, regardless if they are gouged or not have head covers...not just to prevent dings and scratches, but also because it keeps them quiet during play.

I noticed that most people who don't use overs are usually lazy.. rarely walk a round....and not cost conscious.

I laugh when I see people say beat up irons adds character... when you date were you looking to get some strokes in with a hot looking female or one who was all dinged up and showed character? LOL

Not only do I use head covers...but I also put a roof on my house for protection...wax my vehicles for protection, when out in the sun I wear hat and sunglasses for protection as well as a UV protection..I also exercise, eat nutritious meals and whatever else is necessary to protect my body.

But as I said, the convincing argument for me is I try to be respectful of fellow players...and that means when I am walking, without headcovers the clacking of irons against eachother is a distraction and simply rude to fellow golfers.

That is the best, most well thought out response in this entire thread, essentially it is everyones own choice, so mind your own business, and just enjoy the game.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
