On Friday, I played golf at the range. On Friday night, I did some power and speed training swinging heavy and light clubs. Then on Saturday I hit the range. I won't lie, I was probably swing 95% on just about every swing..except on Friday night which was at least 100%, perhaps more . I've started to get a weird pain under my left collar bone, such that it makes it incredibly painful to touch my shoulder to my chin, for example. In probing around the area with my fingers, it seems like the AC joint on the top back of my shoulder is a little sore to the touch as well as where your collar bone connects around the Adam's apple. The bio-mechanical movement that has resulted in this pain is using the hips to start the shoulders moving. This invariably causes the left shoulder (for a right hander) to move forward relative to the body center (forward of coronal plane).

1. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

2. When I turn my shoulders (torso) do I also try to 'pooch' my left shoulder forward and right shoulder back? Or should the shoulder position remain constant relative to the upper torso?

Sounds like you pulled something

I actually had the same thing when I first started playing golf 4 months ago and I got scared because it lasted for a long time (2 months).

You just pulled something from swinging too hard. My pain was located on between my shoulder blade and spine, moreso underneath my shoulder blade and I had it for a long time (partially because i kept playing).

Fastest recovery is just to rest as per my dad (physician)

if i did what you did, my head will probably need a halo cast:)

1. from your description, check out sternocleidomastoid muscle and scalene muscles,,,google the images and get an idea. you may have pulled the insertion area for one of the heads, muscle or tendon. if not getting better, you should see a prof and do some imaging studies. good luck. 2. in a way yes, the torso rotates around the spine and the shoulders are just the corners of the torso. one way to visualize it is to stand in front of a large mirror, particularly the side view, with usual spine angle and rotate, while maintaining the spine angle, like a revolving door...

I had quite a bit of left shoulder pain after a driving range session a few years ago. It turned out to be bicipetal tendonitis that was affecting my shoulder and pectoral muscles. After numerous MRIs and physical therapy with no improvement, I have been taking naproxen for it and that keeps it under control. Unless I hit >150 balls at the driving range, my shoulder feels OK.

2.5 months and it's still a little sore. It comes and goes, though. One good thing: the pain has forced me to shorten my arm swing which has made me way more consistent. I was hitting that medicus power-meter gizmo at around 121, but I've brought it back to around 114. Golf is way more fun when it doesn't hurt. Who cares that I've lost 20 yards or so.

Don't push so hard next time. You probably just over worked the muscle and it needs time to heal. Give yourself til the weekend before you swing again. If its still hurts alot after afew swings then go to the doctor.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
