I'm living in Chicago right now and checked the weather for the weekend and noticed that we have a chance to hit 50 on Saturday. With 2 feet of snow on the ground, it will be too sloppy for the courses, but it got me wondering when you guys start getting out and playing here in the midwest?

Oh and all those golfers who live in Arizona or Florida, or any warm weather climate, don't tell me I need to move.....I'm working on it ;)

The last few years Feburary has been the only month I have not been able to play in Cincinnati area. Usually, we are able to start playing again around the beginning to middle of March, although the weather may still be chilly. We usally are able to play at least 2 weeks of a month year round except January and February. So far this year is looking the same.

I am so tired of snow...

In Milwaukee, WI we are looking at a snow melt off this weekend just like you folks in Chicago. Hopefully, if we don't get pounded again there could be some golf come mid-March or so.

I don't truely expect to get back out till the first or second week in April though. Most of my co-workers won't play till mid-May.

Easter weekend for me in SW Missouri. I play in an annual event with some friends that Friday and Saturday, rain or shine, warm or cold. If possible I try and hit the range a few times before that, but most of the time it will be my first time out. That is my official golfing start.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Here in the Twin Cities I'd say the local muni's open around April 1st on average and the upper scale public and private clubs open around April 20th or so.

I have golfed here around the middle of February once before, granted it was a "dogtrack" where they probably care more about revenue than protecting course conditions and we did get a blizzard with approx 20 inches 2 days later. I couldn't hit the links again for over a month!

I am so glad I don't live any farther North than I do . . . although we had a big snow storm last week, we played last weekend. Playing tomorrow. I would hate to not play for months at a time!

Last year, I went out Feb. 29 when there was still snow on the ground, found an open patch of grass, threw some balls down, and hit into the middle of nowhere. The first time I went out and played was probably the second week in March. I usually go out the first time it is over about 40* and there isn't a lot of snow on the ground.

It is supposed to be near 50* tomorrow and near 50* again Tuesday so I may be able to get out sometime in the next week and at least hit some balls.

Last week it snowed 8 inches in St. Louis. Today it is 71!!!!

So I started today!!!!

I've found the winter break to be a good thing. Time to recharge, refresh mentally and physically. It's also good to refresh the bank acct. If I could play year round, I'd be flat broke.

I also think that during summer, there is no better place to be than the midwest, with so many great courses, great weather, green fairways, 100 year old oak trees lining the fairways.. It's the best.

season never ends. snow is why the started making orange balls

Lawrence, Kansas, MidWest USA:

I've played 9 rounds (of 18 or more) since January 1st. Temps on those outings have been 55,52,40,60,55,65,58,64 and 67 today. The season's more or less started, I'd say.

So are ranges open out near Chicago even though there's a load of snow on the ground? I'll have to go look today lol.

I have been going to a heated driving range most of the winter, mostly carrying a small stand bag with irons only, and wedges for the indoor chipping and putting green. Even with 10 inches of snow on the ground , they plowed the range and the place was packed every day. Everytime I pulled into the crowded lot I thought , "At least I'm not the only idiot". Going to the Golf Expo today and then finish moving this coming week so I can play the next weekend in Florida.

    • While on vacation in Punta Cana a few weeks ago I played with rental clubs, Mizuno Pro 245's with KBS Tour Lite steel shafts. Surprisingly, I was blown away, not only by the distance, trajectory and dispersion I was getting but also about how soft and buttery they felt. It got me thinking.... IT'S TIME FOR NEW IRONS! Just yesterday, at my local Golf Galaxy, I tested them again side by side with the JPX Forged (recommended by the Mizuno rep who happened to be there) which also felt pretty good. Not as buttery soft as the 245's but they did produce slightly better numbers on off-center hits. Also, I haven't played with forged clubs with steel shafts in 10 years thinking I was getting too old and that I needed the lighter weight but these clubs with that shaft felt really, really good. So that's my long and drawn-out intro to my question: Does anyone here at TST play with either of these clubs and if so, what's your opinion?

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.
