Advice on clubs....

What is going to happen when I put Alidila NV shafts on a set of Ping Raptures? High kick(low launch) shaft with high launch irons?

The impact from a change in shafts will depend on your swing tempo, swing speed, angle of attack, etc. THe best way to find out is on a launch monitor or at the range.

FWIW,

I just switched back to X-18 pro's from X-forged. I played them last year and went from 3.5 to 5.8 hdcp or so.
I really like the X-forged, but they are not real forgiving. I only play a few rounds per week max. If I were to play everyday, I think they may have suited me better.

If your playing off that handicap and still want to stay with the Hogans, i would strongely suggest the APEX forged blades. You can pick up at NEW set for i've heard great things about them

Go to a fitter, not a retail golf shop who does fitting. Hit a bunch of stuff. Shafts are so important. Then what is pleasing to you eyes. It'll cost more money but you will be far more happy in the long run. I'm getting ready to replace my irons. My son just got fit and he has a great set for him. I'm using his leftovers which are 10 years newer than what I was playing. Unfortunately they are standard lie and too flat for me. Fitting is huge. Take the time. Spend the money.

Im definently going to get fit for the right length and lie angle for my swing, and I will probably have them bent to the perfect loft for me. I already decided I am going with the royal precision project x either 6.0 or 6.5.
I have narrowed my search down to:
Taylormade Tour Preferred
Taylormade TP MB
Mizuno MP60
Cleveland CG7 Tour
Hogan Apex FTX

It may come down to whatever set I can find for the cheapest that fits my body. I wont care if I need to replace the shafts, but the lie needs to be right, and who knows I may even game some dynamic gold x100 if I like it.

Regarding the Hogans, I've heard they are really sweet clubs. Plus they're pretty inexpensive. However, with the fitting and new shafts, it may not be that cost effective. $300 for clubs + about $250 for PXs + various assembly costs + fitting = about $550-$700. (I'm not sure how much the fitting with lie boards, etc. would cost. I don't know if a place would charge you for assembly if you but the shafts from them.) For $550, that's a sweet set, but for $700+ maybe not.

You could try a combo set with the TP MBs and the Tour Preferred. Just a thought. I'm sure you could make a combo set with the Mizzys if you'd like. I wasn't a huge fan of the CG Reds. I just didn't like the feel. They felt really harsh to me. I don't know if the CG7s are better since I haven't hit them. However, they might be the most forgiving club of the bunch. If I were you, I would think of how often I'm going to work the ball. Plus, there's the forged vs. cast decision.

Try hitting the Mizuno mp33, perhaps a club you did not consider but you might be happy that you did, because once you hit the mp33 nothing feels as balance and looks as good in my humble opinion.

The mp33 has dropped my handicap and I have shot -3,-1 and -1 rounds playing them.

I would suggest the older r7tp because it is just as good, if not better, than the new version and will be less expensive in a little while.

I have hit the Titleist, Mizuno, Taylor and Callaway's. All good clubs and I dont think you would be making a mistake with any of them.

This is coming from a guy who played scratch through high school and college and has now worked his way to an 8, simply through a lack of play...so take this for what it's worth.

Generally speaking, while I have owned several sets of Titleists, I prefer other brands. No offense to anyone who plays them. I think they make a great looking club, but they do tend to be a bit traditional and a little less forgiving as a general rule of thumb.

I used to play Mizuno's in college and I have owned 3 sets. You can't beat their forgings! They are just great clubs.

I also played a set of MB TP Combos for awile. I really liked them, but I think the recent trend of replacing long irons with hybrids makes this set a bit more obsolete now.

I have hit my Dad's X-Forged with Project X and like them alot. I just sold a set of X-Tours that I played with for about 3 years. I actually went with the X-20 Tour with the Project X because I wanted a little larger club head and was tired of being a half to sometimes a full club short. I really like these irons.

I have also owned a couple sets of Hogan's in the past, and have hit the Edge a couple of times. I have never really thought they had much feel...a bit clunky. If you are used to the Edge, I think you would probaby enjoy either the Mizuno or Callaway most.

I really think it comes down to how you play the game. Are you looking to play with the full set? Will you add more hybrids? Try to demo if you can and play a round or two with a ball you can rely on. Sometimes it is really hard to read ball flight and get a true feel for a club inside.
