Square Headed Driver????????

Okay long story short...
yesterday was the first time out playing since Jan. 1 of this year.
I have a Cleveland HiBore the first HiBore I believe,
First hole I top the ball...
thats what I get for not playing...

So second hole I ask my brother to try out his Nike Sumo 5900 Square Head...
(which I do not like the look of it, Square Head)
anyways...
I hit that thing so long and striaght I almost had to change my pants...
for the rest of the round, I kept hitting that thing and no Slice what so ever, just kept going stright for me....

Now my question is, does a square head make you hit striaghter...???
what makes it hit so striaght...?

can anyone shine some light on this for me...
I want to go buy one now, but I want to hear some reviews on this square head driver thing...

The square head is marketed as the more "game improvement" of drivers. I suspect the design provides optimal weighting on the perimeter or some such benefit. I think that Nike does a good job "hiding" the squareness with the way they shade the top outline of the club.

Callaway went the other way, it seems. They embrace the squareness and you can see boldy at set up.

I was planning on testing out a new FTIQ stick from our demo bag at the club but I screwed up my left knee. I'm interested in giving it some range time when I start playing later this month (hopefully). Word is...from guys who've tested this very club....is that this one is forgiving as well as loooong.

Can't wait to try it.

Here is a very quick explanantion of a square headed driver,

In short, yes they do make you hit it straighter, on off centre hits, but they will not make you hit it longer generally.

The reason for this si that the square design allows the manufacturer to put weight in the extreme back corners of the club, as far awayf from the fgace as possible, what this does is increase the moment of inertia ("MOI"). MOI is the clubs ability to resist twisting forces. For the player this equates to:
When the ball comes off the toe or heel, the club will twist less on impact, reducing the side spin imparted on the ball, equating to the ball going straighter.

When the ball is struck out of the middle of the clubface, the result will be little different to that of a regular "round" driver as the MOI has considerably less effect from the centre of the clubface.

In terms of distance the USGA and R&A; set limits as to how far a golf ball can travel off a driver travelling at a certain speed, this means that for example any driver swung at a certain speed is not allowed to hit the ball further than x amount of yards. Since all modern manufacturers make their drivers to absolute maximum limit of this rule, square, round, hexagonal, octagonal, triangular etc etc drivers should hit the ball a cery similar distance (on centre strikes)

Whether you should buy this club or not you have kind of answered this yourself and only you can decide whether you actually want it or not.

It is always worth bearing in mind what i call the "excited" effect. It is easy to swing a new club, hit a good shot and be very excited about it and produce good results for a couple of rounds. However once this excitement has worn off it is common to go back to your original problems, but a couple of hundred £'s/$'s worse off!

If you are considering buying a new driver the best advice you can ever get is to go and get a PROPER fitting for it, no one can tell you what loft and shaft to get unless they see everything about your game.

And remember there is no such thing as a magic club, if you hit a big slice normally, you will still do so with a square driver, but to less of an extent!!

I was able to go to a golf event a few weeks ago to demo all the current and newer clubs coming out and I was amazed with the new nike drivers. I was hitting them so well, I'm sold on them now, but to be quite honest I didn't hit the square head as well as the round sq dymo driver. I would also suggest trying the sq dymo as well and see which works well for you.

did not meation that... All I said was that it went straight and no slice... I never hitted a square headed driver... I can hit my Cleaveland just fine... but tends to draw and fade when I don't want it too... dang some people.... or should I say SOME PEOPLES KIDS....

i started using my square headed ft-i over a year ago and i love the forgiveness of it. it does help me hit it straight. and if you are worried about losing distance when using a square headed driver, dont be. if there is any loss, its usually just a couple of yards. and personally id rather be in the fairway instead of 10 yards further in the trees somewhere. but Callaways new FT-iQ has a hotter face now, so the ft-iq is longer than the ft-i. and i too have heard fantastic things about Nike's new square driver. it seems as if it gave you a ton of confidence, which is what the ft-i did for me, so i would suggest buying one for yourself. the confidence factor is big imo

I can definatley vouch for both the ft-i and ft-iq. I have owned both and once you get used to (or over) the square face and how closed they look at address, the sooner you'll start hitting it straighter. By far I am not a heavy hitter, but very recently started learning to hit my iq better and started getting a lot more distance over my ft-i.

I tried the FT-i and I agree with the above posts. I am waiting for them to trickle down off the $500 price range, which they already have, but I just bought a new driver late last year. How could I justify another so soon...... ?

What about Callaway's Squareway Fairway Woods ?
Do they offer they same forgivness as the driver ?

I tried the squareway 3 wood for about two weeks which took me through 3 rounds and many buckets at the range. Maybe cause I am just a shankapotamus, but I just could not hit that club straight. Everything hooked hard left and I couldnt get it to go straight off the deck or on a tee.
