For me, it was all trial and error. Experimenting with different lofts to see how comfortable i was with the coverages - experimenting to see if different combos gave me the flexibillity to do what i wanted to inside of 115yards. (the yardage i consider short game range) I also considered the bounces of the clubs.

Ive used several different loft combos (56-60, 50-56, 52-56, 51-55) until i finally settled on 54-58. Its a spread im comfortable with inside of 115 yards.

What bounce in each and why?

These are the "M" grind. They come with a set bounce. I demoed them recently and knew they were perfect for what I was looking to add to the bag...ideal distances and versatility. I know the gap between my 47*pw and my 53* wedge will be a bit larger than the rest of the clubs in my bag (driver and woods excluded), but I also know that I rarely run into a situation where I'm in between clubs at that distance.

Which do you use more for bunker shots?

Thanks for the reply.

feel, trajectory, shot habits...

i bent my 54 to a 56 this year so i could be more aggresive on chips and partial shots. Also my tendency last year was to either hit it a bit too far and then swing light the next shot to compensate.

its all about feel and tendencies.

sometimes i play a round and realize im digging in too much on the toe of a few of my irons so i will go after the round and have the lies checked and adjusted.

nothing is better then getting feedback and then making adjustments.

I learned to golf with whatever was available...and to some degree I still play that way. At some point I need to get on board with a few wedges and dial in distances. To this point, I have usually played 95% of my short game with 9 iron and my dad's old Sam Snead sand wedge (loft and bounce unknown). Probably not the best way to play golf, but it is fun playing different shots as the situation dictates. Perhaps not all bad in my learning process. I have not been comfortable swinging hard with wedges, which is why I often drag out the 9 iron for a half swing on intermediate shots.

I started making better use of a matched pair of PW and SW last summer, but it was tough to stand over a tricky shot without old faithful.

Your wedge input on this thread is very helpful, thanks.

Trial and error for me. My first matched set of clubs were Ping Eye 2. I found out when I was getting a new set that the lofts of the wedges were less than I thought (SW was 52* and LW was 56*). At that time I switched to Titleist Vokey and went with 52 and 58. I later had them bent to 54 and 60, which is what I have now in Vokey spin milled. My PW is 48*.

I carry 3 wedges 48, 54, 60 which is 6-7* from the 9*. All are low bounce. The plan is to get an even distribution.

I expect to use all of them from the fairway at some point in time hence with the low bounce.

I can't think of many if any pro golfers that have a 4 wedge setup. I think that is simply because they can control better. I honestly don't know when I really use a 5W so my set up for the year will be 3 or 4W and 46*, 50*, 56*, 60*. I don't know the bounce quite yet because I haven't played the courses where I live now. the downfall is that when it is time to buy new wedges it gets up there in price. I will buy a 60* first and if I have as much trouble hitting it as I did when I took the last one out of my bag I will go to a 46*, 52*, and 58*

I started like this:

45/6 PW from my AP1 set
52/10 CG14
56/14 CG14

However I have a big gap between 110 yds (Full PW) and 70 yds (pitch with the 52). I cant really hit the CG14 well on full shots.
So I ordered the 50/7 GW AP1 to fill the distance gap. (60 lob wedge from my sig will stay home)

45 - 50 - 52- 56 looks a bit strange, but I will hit the AP1s for full shots, and the CG14s for pitches and chips.

(BTW: I also ordered a Vokey SM 54/11 just to see how it performs)

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
