I'm thinking of getting a new hybrid or two. As you can see in my bag I have the titleist and the sonartec. I'm looking for something very forgiving, straight, but still long. I don't really need any workability for my hybrids. I was thinking about selling the titleist and picking up a 19 degree sonartec md on ebay cheap to match by 17. I know sonartec is out of business, but are they still good hybrids compared to more recent ones? Anybody got any opinions on this?

Thanks!

the two hybrids id suggest are the titlest 909H and the taylormade burner. i cant personally vouch for the 909H, but ive read many reviews about them, and it seems that everybody loves theirs.

i can, however, speak for the burner. i bought it this winter and hit it in the simulator. after not hitting a golf ball for 3 months, i was a little rusty. but after a few swings, and i got my groove back a little bit, i was launching them 230 yards right down the middle. its really easy to hit and it envokes a feeling of confidence at address. plus, you can get it from a store for $130 and you could probably get it cheaper on ebay.

those are the two id suggest looking at.

good luck

I cant comment on the Sonartec, but I recommend the Mizino CLK. Very forgiving and reasonably long.
Im more a fan of the iron-like MP Fli-Hi, but the CLKs are very nice if you prefer a wood-like hybrid.

the best hybrids i have ever hit are the Nickent 5DX's. i demo'd them yesterday during a round of golf and i am going to Edwin Watts tomorrow to buy a couple of them (they're having a promo where they will give you $75 off the Nickent 5DX's if you bring in ANY old/used hybrid to trade in on them). they are by far the longest, straightest, most forgiving hybrids i have EVER hit in my life. im even thinking about buying 3 of them and replacing my Sonartec 3 and 5 woods too. they are AWESOME and you owe it to yourself to try one out. it almost felt like i was cheating. they are THAT good

I thought the OP said he wanted something forgiving and straight. The 909's are open faced... so that one kinda defeats the purpose.

I hit the 5dx and thought it felt like a giant marshmallow... plus the wings on the back arent very becoming. I do like the last years 4dx though... I would put those second behind the Exotics XCG hybrids in terms of feel, forgiveness and distance.

But... its your decision... if you are happy with the Sonartec... get those.

What does the fact that they are open faced have to do w/anything. He said he wanted straight not a hook machine.

Now to the OP: As you can probably tell from my sig i love my 909h. Best hybrid ever. Good luck.

Would you say that it is more forgiving than the 585h that i have?

I've hit both the 909 and the 585. I prefer the 585 because of it's workability. I like having a hybrid that I can bend left or right if I need to. The 909 is definitely easier to hit straight though.

Thanks, good info. I think I might try and switch out my 585 for a 909 and if I like it maybe switch my sonartec too.

Any shaft suggestions of the 909?

to each his own, but really, dont limit yourself to just one or 2 hybrids. it seems as if you are being swayed in the Titleist direction, but try to be open minded and hit a few others too. ive hit them all (Titleist, Sonartec, TEE, Adams, TM, Mizuno, and even Scratch) . i can demo any hybrid i want at anytime and my favorite so far has been the Nickent 5DX (4DX is great too). try to hit as many different hybrids as you can before you buy. ive honestly never hit a longer, more forgiving hybrid than the 5DX and I will have one in my bag by Monday at the latest

Just out of curiosity how do you demo anything anytime you want? Not doubting you just wondering. Maybe we have Bill Gates on this forum

I have the Cleveland Hi Bore XLS-amazingly easy to hit. Just goes high and straight whatever. I dont quite get all this 'workability' stuff. Unless you are single figures and a pretty good player, surely an easy hit that goes straight is the main priority.

Is that a serious statment? The fact that it is open faced means it plays a fade bias... that isnt necessarily straight. The OP never said anything about having a problem hooking anything.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
