If the car starts and the roads aren't icey or unsafe, I'll play golf. Mind you, I live in the DFW area. It rarely gets below 25*F here. We maybe have ten days per year that dip below freezing overnight/early morning then it warms up to high 30s/mid 40s by noon. Some years no freezes.

I'm a golf addict, but I grew up in So Cal and there's just too many nice days in CA to be willing to play in cold weather (below 60 degrees). And, if I have to wake up early to play in cold weather, that is even worse. I just can't stand being cold and stiff off the first tee, although it does "help" my index.

The coldest I've played was with a client in Chicago this year at the end of the season and it was in the mid-50s. I was freezing by the end.

I will go into the mid 30's but the time of year makes a difference. Even when we got some unseasonalby warm weather, mid 60's, here a week ago I did not and would not go play. The greens (really yellowish browns) are in horrible shape so what little skill you might have on the green is pure luck.

I played last April in the low 40's with a 20+ mph wind, wind chill had to be in the 20's.

We play year round, sometimes we have to wait for frost delays.

The coldest I've played in is about -5 celcius (about 24F), but on average, I don't like to play below 7C, or 44F.

Cheers, Allan

I used to have a buddy that would golf with me in any weather. When it got nasty, we'd go out. The best/worst day we set out when it was 29 and sleeting. By the time we finished it was around 25 with a light snow. It was cold, but it was really fun. Here in central Texas, that is about as cold as it gets during the day.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

There is no such thing as, "too cold". As long as the course is still open, I would play.

A man after my own heart. The cold doesn't stop me. I've got thermal gloves, thermal underwear, thermal socks and a thermal head cover thingy that makes me look like a ninja. Oh, and a big warm coat with a hood. Hard to swing the club with all that gear on but what the hell. Most of the courses around here won't let you go out if there's snow on the greens. Basically, that's those are the only days I don't play. Last Thursday me and another guy played Pipestone and it was so windy it was hard to stand still addressing the ball. We were the only two fools on the whole course but we still had a great time. The operative word there is "fool." I don't know if I'm a golfing fool or a fool golfing but if the course is open and I've got time to play, I'm there!

I'll play in the high 20's low 30's as long as i can walk. Walking makes a big difference in the cold.

Kinda funny story about how cold is relative: the other day, me and a friend were driving to lunch with the windows down. It was 26* F.

I live in western massachusetts so I am used to change in weather. I will pretty much play as long as I can feel my feet and hands, and there is no snow anywhere in play. But if there is no snow at all I will pretty much play anytime. Im pretty hardcore!!

2ºC = 35ºF My minimum requirements to play are 1. Cold 2. Wind 3. Rain Pick any TWO . On most "iffy" golf mornings, I turn into an amateur meteorologist. Tracking the doppler, trying to find that 4 hour window of little or no precipitation. I'm getting pretty good at tracking the rain!

Supposed to be 51 degrees here on Tuesday, I'm gonna go play 9 holes if it's not windy.

I'll play in 45-50 degree temps here and there but mostly prefer to play above 60 degrees. In the summer when it's 110 F I usually rent a cart.

If it's sunny with no wind I can play comfortably in the mid to upper 30's. When the wind kicks up the sun is non existent and it's below 40, it's no longer fun to be out. I have in previous winters played in January. The past 2 years here in Chicago I have only watched it on TV in Dec & Jan. I have one round in so far in 2009. It got up in the fifties here a few weeks ago.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
