i work at a course and im a part of the cart and range staff...
i open early in the morning thank goodness... so all i do is unplug the carts... pull them out of the barn... line them up next to the club house and wait for ppl to return them... the guys that work after me... clean the carts out and return them to the barn... plug them back in for the night...
on the range... we jump in the picker in the morning... clear the range... clean range balls in the industrial washer... bag balls for the proshop...
oh if anybody on the course's carts die on them... or have flats... i go get them a new cart and return/fix the other one

Golf Cart & Clubhouse Attendant

Ya I would agree that the title should be "Golf Course Bitch Boy/Girl"

I had that job when I was 14-15. It was fun and I enjoyed it. I was fired though for playing golf one Sunday night after all the carts came in. Basically I just did whatever the pro said. Sometimes i would set up for tournaments, other times I would empty trash cans on the course.

I would say its a great job for 14-18 year olds.

As a teacher, I hope to find a summer job at one of the local golf courses. I would work for golf. As a chemistry teacher, I could even be a pool boy for free golf.

I would say that it depends on mow much salary you are looking for. The maintenance crew where I work get paid pretty well, however they also have the hardest job. I actually dont really work though, I volunteer as a starter and I put in about 6 hours of work per week. It is well worth the free membership in my opinion.

Anyhow I think that working in the pro shop would be a good deal too. Plus you get to play with all the new toys that come in.

I doubt you're old enough for Maintenance Crew so you'll be stuck doing the Range or Carts. At my job, I do both and to be honest it sucks beyond belief. It's easy as hell but it gets boring and old very quick. Basically this is a run down of a typical summer day for me when I work. I get to the course at about 10am and play a round for free, then once I'm done, I clock in and go clean the 20+ carts that have been used already and go stage them for the next people. Then go pick the range for an hour, then come back and clean the rest of the 40 carts which trickle in until dark. You also are the bitch to everyone there and have to do stupid stuff all day but to be honest, if its a course you like and you get free/discounted golf, then I'd say go for it. There's no way I'd be able to play as much as I do if I didn't work there.

I love working at my course in the summer I am the cart valet or attendent, and I arrive early and unlock the shed, gas the carts and stage them to be used for the day. I also wash clubs when they are finished and get great tips from the members! if i have to close I get a lunch break during the day because I won't leave until 10 putting the carts away and washing them with the power washer. I love the free golf, but working at a course alone is worth the time becasue it is my favorite place to be during the day.

You'll never get rich working at a course, but as long as they offer cheap golf and other perks, it's a great part time job for a golfer. Since I retired I've been working part time as a starter at my home course... $7.50 an hour isn't going to get me on the Forbes 100 richest men list, but I play more than 100 rounds a year for cheap, buy all of my equipment with my discount through the pro shop, get all of the free range balls I want, and the head pro doesn't even charge the course employees for private lessons.

But I generally work from 20 to 25 hours a week though, too. And I have to do more than just be the starter for one course. We have 2 courses that the starter manages, as well as call ins for advance reservations. My day can be quite hectic. If I have the early shift I get to the course before sunup, get the carts out of the garage and onto the line, then open the starter booth. I take checkins for both courses (plus manage the waiting list for walk-ons), page players to the tees, record turn times and finish times on the 18 hole course to help manage pace of play, and also handle the phone for both day of play and advance reservations (up to one week). So on a busy day (which most are at our facility) it can get really crazy.

I don't feel the least bit guilty about banking that huge paycheck.

One thing I know for sure is if you work on the grounds crew, you will be doing physical labor. Some heavy, some light. It's not all about sitting on a mower and passing the time cutting grass. You will need to have good work ethic, and take pride in what you do because if something is done half-arsed you won't last long. But the benefit is knowing you took part in grooming something for hundreds of people to enjoy and that you made a difference, however direct/indirect it may have been, in the playability of the golf course.

My dad is retired and worked at his club once a week. He didn't get paid but got to play for free. Considering he's retired, that was a pretty good deal. He worked as a ranger and a starter. He liked the starter the most. He was pretty much done by 1:00pm. A ranger seems like the worst job in the world. He got on to this old guy for parking on the shoulder of the green. He had already warned him once. The guy blew up and started yelling at him. What an ahole.

Do you have any clubs in your area to work as a caddie?

I have worked every position on a golf course, outside services(cart/range boy), golf shop assistant, starter, marshall, now I am a professional caddie. Out of everything, caddies is by far the best, money-wise and fun-wise. I work at a ultra exclusive private club ranked in the top #100, and it is the nicest track I have ever seen, I play it once a week no charge....dope. But out of the realistic jobs, golf shop is the best. It can get kinda slow standing around just taking money all day, but you get to interact with a bunch of guys, and you will notice guys from other golf courses will come in, and improves your chances of getting an invitation to their course. Cart boy is great if you dont like people, you can smoke a bowl, and go spend a couple hours driving the picker around making a game of pickin up balls, I loved driving the picker and taunting guys on the driving range, most of them aim for you and they suck, but Ive been belted over 100 times, its pretty loud but funny. Believe me, they need people with more experience to do maintenance work, they have the hardest jobs. Be a marshall if you can, all you do is drive around the course and mark down times, and tell people nice shot(since most marshalls dont actually speed anybody up) good luck to ya.
