Favorite Golf Book

I took my kids to Borders the other night so they could use some gift cards they had. I was walking through the sports section and saw Ben Hogan's Five Lessons. I have always heard great reviews and decided to pick it up. That got me to thinking about my favorites. What are your favorites?Instructional and entertainment:

Instructional: Bob Rotella, Golf is not a game of Perfect.

Entertainment: John Feinstein, A Good Walk Spoiled.

For a good light read I would also reccomend Garry McCord's Just a Range Ball in a Box of Titleists.

Anything by Rotella for both instructional and inspirational. He touches on both in most of his books, especially Golf is not a Game of Perfect and Golf is a Game of Confidence.

I re-read these books every year.

I like Dan Jenkin's golf stuff, although it's getting a bit dated now. Like "Dogged Victims of Inexorable Fate." You gotta love the Bobby Jones quote for the title.

All the books mentioned are great reads, I will throw my 2 cents worth in and hope some of you can enjoy as well...

The Masters - Curt Sampson - not a long read, but great history of Augusta
Hogan - Sampson - great stories about arguably the greatest golf swing of all time
The Majors - Feinstein - love Feinstein's work and this does not disappoint
The Spirit of St. Andrews - Alister MacKenzie - not sure if this needs an explanation

I would also recommend short stories by a Canadian golf writer by the name of Lorne Rubenstein, writes for the Globe and Mail, always enjoyed his stories, just my personal opinion though.

Last but not least...

Zen Lessons, Insights, and Inner Attitudes of Golf - Jeff Wallach - Very deep and reflective book if you are into that sort of thing.

Sports Illustrated writer Rick Reilly wrote a funny book called "Whos Your Caddy". He caddies for people like John Daly, Jack Nicklaus, Bob Newhart, Deepak Chopra, Casey Martin and Donald Trump. Its an entertaining read.

I like, Golf for enlightenment by Deepak Chopra.

Rotella's books are really good. Also, Harvey Penick's Little Red Book is pure genius (as well as "And If You Play Golf, You're My Friend").

Swing Like A Pro, one of the best fundamental books ever!

As I'm new to golf I have been reading everything I can get my hands on. Wishon and Pelz were especially helpful as I got a lot of good information on how to build a set of clubs tailored for me, and how to think about golf as a game of strategy as well as skill. But one of my favorite books is John Updike's Golf Dreams. Updike has always been one of my favorite authors and this book really conveys the romance and beauty of playing as well as the challenges, frustrations, highs and lows.

Harvey Penick is amazing...i read it when i was 12 and again this year and it just gets more and more amazing each time...pick it up at all costs, its truely one of the best golf books ever...

Who's Your Caddy? by Rick Reilly was hilarious. But as far as what has helped my game, Pelz's Short Game Bible, no question.

I loved Inside The Ropes by Feinstein. All the inner workings surrounding the US Open at Bethpage was a great read. I'd recomend it to anyone.

A Good Walk Spoiled by Fienstein is a good read. I also vote for Penick's Little Red Book.

The "And Arnie said to Jack" series of books is good too.

Ok - I have to second "A good walk spoiled," and very much so "Who's your Caddy?" both great reads.

Another one you should try and find is called "Tin Cup Dreams" very great book about a man who grinds to make it on the PGA tour - awesome book about a great guy.

I just finished John Daly's new book - My Life in and out of the Rough - Always loved John Daly - lot's of things in his past.

A fun read is "A Mulligan for Bobby Jobe". It is a novel about a golfer who lost his sight, but not his game, and the caddy who helped him. It is fiction, but good fiction.
