I completely respect your decision to not get on the Fred Flinstone driver train. I just have to ask, what benefits (and I'm sure there are some) that you have seen from playing a smaller headed driver?

Fred Flinstone driver craze... LOL, I almost fell out off my couch.

I use the 975J, a 312cc driver, so smaller in size than the current monsters, but I don't think there is much difference in playability. 1) I feel that the newer, bigger drivers have a deader feeling when hitting it flush than do the drivers with smaller heads. There just feels like more response from the smaller heads. 2) A smaller head means less air resistance during the swing which translates into more clubhead speed, maybe only 2-3 mph, but at optimum launch angles would translate into 6-7 more yards. 3) An older driver is less likely to be stolen out of a bag

Cheers, Allan

Those are all terribley valid points. I know I was having driver problems for a couple of weeks. I just put the old 3 wood in the bag and can relate, with that club, to all three points.

I totally lucked out by going with an old school driver. I picked up an original Launcher 460 in my sig, and ohhh man. I'm ashamed at what I would have paid for that thing. It really, really is the best driver for MY swing I have EVER hit. But I got it for $50! So yay me! I even had a total stranger at the range say "Damn you hit that one good, what are you hitting?" Then I proceeded to do the same thing throughout a small bucket. Point there is, go with what works. Even if it is 200cc.

This I do not understand.

One benefit of getting a smaller headed driver is that I won't feel like I'm swinging a shovel. I just plain old don't like the look of a 460cc clubhead at address. I don't think a 460cc driver is necessary for someone of my athletic ability.

Honestly I would look into a driver like mine. Taylor made r5 draw (or neutral).

I've been looking at them a little bit and I like the looks of them but I've never hit one. What's the look and feel like at address compared to a 975J or something similar?

    • A sand trap is not supposed to have 3 inches of water in it. To me that’s temporary, casual water. Just like if your ball lands in a deep rain puddle in the middle of the fairway. I would have gladly hit out of any spot in that bunker. I understand that it’s a different rule. I just think it’s a dumb rule. You are penalized because it rained.  Here’s what I think is the dumbest rule in golf, and all sports for that matter - professionals playing for millions of dollars in a tournament have to carry around a little pencil and scorecard to keep their score and sign it, when there are big scoreboards all over the course and on tv. Can you imagine the Knicks losing because they didn’t count their score correctly? Like I said, I love the game, but it’s time to move into the 21st century already.
    • Sorry to lose you, thx for letting us know
    • I have to bow out for the weekend. I was only in for Saturday as it was
    • Could course committee have an MLR option to declare this bunker GUR?
    • Sorry, I will disagree. You got a penalty because you hit it somewhere and didn't want to play it from there. Bunkers are not the general area. If you had hit it into temporary water in the general area, you'd be entitled to relief. You hit it into a hazard, a bunker. Why should you get free relief when you hit it into a bunker? If someone else hit it into a different part of the bunker, without water, they'd not get a drop for free out of the bunker. Heck, it'd cost them two strokes if they didn't have an ACC and wanted to drop it out of the bunker.
